We had a gun show yesterday, and here is some of the stuff I got.

1 full coffee can of 308 brass - $10
4 boxes of 7mm bullets assorted weights - $15 (I sold one box before I left the show for 15 so got the rest for free)
40 pieces of 7mm/08 brass - $8 and the guy threw in about 50 mixed 7mm 140 gn bullets
1 unopened box Speer 250gn Hot-core 35 cal - $10
40 pieces of nickle federal 338 brass - $10
250 Winchester once fired 45 colt - $25
And last but not least a Remington 1903 totally redone and chambered in 358 Norma magnum - $220
This rifle is really nice. it has a 25" barrel and a walnut stock with some really nice grain in it. i hope to shoot it tomorrow and then i will try to post some pics of the rifle (I have a bedding job drying in it right now and don't want to mess with it)
Well any way, just wanted to brag a bit about my deals.

Looks great. I would have passed on the 45 Colt brass though.:kidding:

I'll bet that's a misprint on the 45 colt brass.

Daniel, getcha as much 358 NM brass or forming brass as you can find. That's a great round, but brass can be hard to get..

Yes, I was thinking he got it one digit off. That was the reason for the joke.

Ok, My insane jealousy prevents me from posting more...Good job on finding something nice amongs all the beef jerky and Paladium Press books on how to weather the next economic collapse of the free world that I normally see at gunshows.

your right i got the wrong price on the 45 colt. that was $25. I was really pleased to find 45 colt brass. a guy wanted me to sell him 200 before the show ended and I was like "I'm not sharing - no way - these are MINE!"
I shot the 358 today and it shoot WONDERFULL! With 62gn of powder and a 270gn boolit it kicks nicely and shoots about 2" at 100 yards with a peep sight I shoved on there.
I like it
to bad hunting season just ended......

Hunting season just ended? For shame my young friend! Load that sucker up with a nice 150-180 358 peestol boolit and somewhere around 13.0 Red Dot and see what happens! There's rabbits to hunt in the winter and charging blocks of ice. Use your imagination....

There is also next hunting season to get ready for, and a swinging steel plate at 100 yards, and why do i have to down load for rabbits? I don't like gutting them anyhow.

I got some 338 Wm brass that I am using right now. It ranges from 5 to 10 thousands to short between 6 different brands.

That is a beautiful rifle! For $220 you stole it. Makes you wonder about the guy who built it, though. He takes a $600 '03, spends $500 having it sporterized and winds up with a rifle worth $220.

More likely he had a $35.00 action (1960 prices) a $75.00 barrel (1970 prices) and a $50.00 stock (1975 prices). Then he sold it and 4 owners later it was discovered brass was hard to get. Seen it a lot.

The guy I got it from was not the original owner.
I have looked and looked for the makers name on the barrel and cant find it.

I also have not told you that the guy was asking $350 for it but I just kept bugging him and got it for $220. I was gonna give him $350 but tried to get is as cheap as I could, and I did not dare go lower then $220.

Better lock that up or your Dad may spirit that away from you. Nice rifle!
This is what makes it so worthwhile to be a reloader and a boolit caster.

I already offered him more than twice what he paid for it but he is still holding out. Little bugger learned well! If he thinks he's getting three times what he paid he's nuts, although I do seem to be weakening.
I just offered my 9x57 mauser and his pick of any of my contender barrels and he turned it down, can you believe the nerve!!! Maybe I will offer up some taboot too. Man that rifle feeds so smooth, even with empties.

I use 300 Win. Mag brass because of that very thing. Down here the 300 brass seems to be more plentiful than 338 brass. Gotta get Pop to get you some 300 grain boolits to really see how fantastic that cartridge is. I built mine in 1983 using a Bishop stock, a Mark X action and a Slilen barrel. Really more gun than is necessary doen here but what the hay!!!!!

BTW heck of a buy!!!

I was gonna ask about using 300 WM brass. 338s are easier to get here, but I can get 300 WM.

Bullshop Junior
10-21-2009, 08:52 PM
Ok, I went and tried to make some 358 Normas out of 300 WM, and found that after firing I had a ring that was to think at the bottom on the inside of the neck. Well I had a .358" inside neck reamer and went and reamed them out fired them again and BINGO, perfect full length 358 Norma.
Point of this post? Any one making 358 Normas out of 300 WM might want to check for a ring inside of the neck.

Really nice looking rifle! What a deal!

Now that you have brass you have a great moose buster. I'd bet at moderate
velocities it will be a boolit shooter, too.

I know what you mean about being slick, too. A good Springfield just seems to
be really smooth, maybe the hardness of the steels used.

Good deals.

Good find!! I have an'03 in 308 Norma Mag. It has killed more game for me than all my other rifles combined. If I had to give up all but one rifle, I would keep the '03.

I got a load right now with cast (I have not tried Jacketed in it) at 2150 that shoots about 1&1/2" at 100 yards with the peep sight. Boolit is 280gn LFN
I think if I changed powder I could get more velocity. That is as much of that powder as I could get in the case.
My dad shoots the same boolit out of his 35 whelen at 2400 about 2" groups at 100 yards

Get some 4320, 4350, Rl-15, Ramshot Tac, or Varget and hold on. You can easily get near 2800fps with a 250gr slug. Vv 530 or 140 also work real well in it. You got a good one as it is very powder friendly.

I apologize Daniel. I found the same thing with Winchester brass but not with Remington brass. The last time I fire formed brass I did up 100 cases which I am still using. I plumb forgot.

Thats fine.
I only formed one. I have had the old black Federal 300 laying on my bench for months, so i pulled the bullet and reformed it. Next time I need brass (I have about 60 right now from federal 338s) I am going to use 300 WM I think. I have a inside neck reamer, why not use it?

That ring is what they call "The Dreaded Doughnut" in case anyone runs across the term elsewhere.

O.K., Junior, so you've got a 280 gr LFN grouping fairly well at 2150 fps. That takes care of the small game, what are you going to use for bigger stuff???:kidding:

MtGun44
10-23-2009, 07:40 PM
I'm thnking that 2150 fps with a 280 LFN will shoot right thru a moose broadside.
Darned good accy, too. I don't know what your young eyes let you do, but I can
only shoot about 1" as my best groups with open sights at 100.

Since a moose has a kill zone 'a bit' larger than 1.5" ;-), you should be set for moose,
deer and pretty much anything you run across. I suppose that a big brown/griz would
not be on the menu on purpose, but if the griz refuses to play nice, I suspect that it
would still work if placed carefully.
