My friend just gave me 12 lbs. of HS7 from his .38 Super days. Does anyone know a good load for .357 Mag. using cast 150 gr., or if this a reasonable idea? Man 12 lbs.of powder to burn. Thanks for your advice.

Hogdon's website should have data. I would think it would be a pretty good powder for that - especially free!

Yeah, It's a decent powder for .357. It won't give quite the velocity of H-110 or 4227, but it's up there. If memory serves, and I could be wrong, it was discontinued a good while ago, and date may be scarce. From Hodgdon #22, max is 10 grains for 158-160 grain bullets, both lead and jacketed. Pressure is shown as a little higher with jacketed, but within limits..

Leftvoerdj has it. Hodgdon has not listed HS7 for quite awhile, but the 10 grain load with 158s is what is listed in the older Hodgdon loading guides. I've shot quite a bit of that powder in 357 mag and it is one of my favorites loads with the 358156. You received a very handsome gift.

As an aside, this powder is not at all suitable for medium to larger size bottle neck cases with cast loads. Don't even bother trying, as there so many others much more suitable.

Here is a burn rate chart. Right next to Blue Dot and Win 571. I seem to remember along time ago someone writing it was surplus or off spec 571.

Sounds like it might be a great powder for plinking loads for straightt pistol cases by what you guys say.

Last I heard, direct from Hodgdon, HS-7 and Win 571 are one and the same.

I used to shoot a lot of 571 when we used it for a 1 3/8oz 12 ga loading for late season South Dakota pheasants.

Yes, HS-7 and W571 were the exact same powder. Both are discontinued but older printed data is still valid.

Great powder for the 357sig, 40 & 10mm, even does well in high end 9mm loads. I haven't used it in 357mag, but don't see why not. I'll check some older manuals I have & see if they have data.
