I have just purchased a new Marlin Model 1895 :-P and intend to use the RCBS 405 grain gas check boolit for hunting and heavy loads. I would like to use a lighter boolit (without a gas check) for plinking. (jeez, what do you mean you can't "plink" with a .45-70!) I am thinking about the Magma Engineering 300 grain flat point BB boolit with two crimping grooves as I know that nose lenght can be an issue in loading for the Marlin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

some where in years past I have bumped across squib loads for rifle ammo. I would call and ask a powder maker if they have a suggestion. would trust what they say more than most advice.

The 340 Lee isn't much to look at, but shoots quite well.

I have a #1 Ruger and I have good accuracy with AA5744 and IMR 4759 using the Lee 457-340F and a RCBS 45-300 FP. The RCBS is a GC design but it's very light recoil. The Lee is the most accurate. I don't know about the Magma boolit but I sure don't like the beval base. If you could find a boolit like the Lyman 457122 or a 457191 they should work. My Lyman manual shows them listed with a OAL of 2.55 for a 1895 Marlin.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook - 3rd edition has good data on light loads for the .45-70 Gov't. The 3rd edition has been around forever and the 4th edition is being released at the 2010 SHOT show. The key to good accuracy with light loads in the .45-70 Gov't. is using a case filler to hold the powder against the primer. Lyman says to use "Dacron". Dacron is a word that is not used anymore. It is now called polyester. You can buy a 1/4" thick sheets of it at any place that sells fabric.

+1

Don't know about the looks part but the Lee 340 gr. shoots great out of my Marlin 45/70.

One of the guys here ( i forget his user name, but not his real one) paper patches 45 auto pistol boolits to use in his 45/70. I have just loaded up a few to try. I am going to try to go shooting today.

It's a good concept you're playing with and I've been there and although a little trouble, it's worthwhile I think.

I use a M95 Marlin and light loads of fast burning powder.

I used two bullets. The first was a RCBS 45-300-FN that we've HP'd and reworked the bands to cast .462". I sized to .460" and got decent accuracy out of it in the 1 1/2" range at 100 yards. But, the GC prices limited that deal. This one weighs 303 grains.

Next I had a Lyman 457191 that was undersize....457+. Again, we reworked the bands to .462" and HP'd it. I have shot some and it does well in plinking but I haven't put any on paper yet but things look good. This one weights 278 grains.

I'm hoping the 457191 works out as there's no need in slinging that much lead down range for plinking./beagle

coalgeo,

Here's the ones I've had good luck with in the 1895CB:

Saeco #015 300 gr(310 gr/WW+12% lino)
Lyman 457122 34330 gr(342 gr/20:1)
RCBS 325U(320 gr WW+12% lino)

As mentioned by others 4759, 5744 work great 4198, 3031also work. If you want a real light plinker Unique or Trail Boss.
Also let's not forget the original BP, it always works.................:-):-)

When I first started CAS I shot an 1886 in 45-70. I used the RCBS 300gr w/o a GC o/ 9gr of Unique w/ a Dacron filler. Good for about 900fps & 3" @ 100yds.

NEI makes a 345gr GC that I use for offhand practice with my Sharps and 1895.
Shoots well at trapdoor speeds without a gas check.

The RCBS 300 -FN shoots good in my Marlin. It tends to cast a little undersized but that can be fixed.

I have been happy with this one. Works well in my marlin guide gun.

i shot the three paperpatched 230 grain 45acp boolits yesterday. i did absoloutly nothing special with them in fact i just kind of threw them together because i didnt even know if they would work. they did. in fact, they worked well enough that i am going to actually develop a couple of loads for them. i used, of all things, "post it notes" for the paper patch. they are quite conveinient, as they already have a sticky strip on them. one thing though, remember to cut off any paper that is protruding from the case. i had one that would not chamber because there was to much paper sticking out. if you want a light (for a 45/70) bullet plinking load, these may fill your nitch.

I've had succes with roundball in the 45-70 for short range 50 - 75 yrds plinking.

The 45 collar button GB we did a while ago works well too.

What would be the number of that boolit?
