Aside from drifting the pin out of the front sight what is involved in getting it off? I thought it should come straight off with my little brass hammer but it did not want to seem to come off. I want to put a 17a of sort out there. Anyone have any good way of doing so?

Thanks,

Bart

What I did was to machine an adapter with a transverse dovetail to fit the sight slot on the bottom and a standard dovetail on the top. I then put a 17A low in the unit and tapped it into place. This works well with my St. Marie rear and lets me use the same inserts that I have on my other rifles. I would think any competent machinest could make you one of these for $15.00 or so. The St. Marie front peep is a clamp on unit that mounst behind the sight and I dont think a base like that for the 17A would be hard to make either. I also have a K31 with the original front sight milled off at the bottom of the dovetail and a standard dovetail cut in. This works well with a F/P rear sight, but does modify the rifle from issue.

Thank you. Originally I was going to just mill the sight down flat and put a dovetain in it as you mention doing. I have already drilled and tapped it for scope bases and just added 2 d&t'ed 8-40 holes to attach my receiver sight so perserving it as issued is no longer an issue :) But I like your idea of the tranverse small dovetail too. First thing though I still can't get it off. Soaked it with Kroil for a couple days and tried tapping it off again last night and it does not want to let go. Are they stubborn or am I missing something?

Get you a nut breaker at the hardware store and grind the v, flat to match the sight. The file it out to fit over the sight base and crank away. This is a rough approximate of the original sight adjusting tool and will move the most stubborn sights.

swissrifle.com and it is in FAQ's I think.

And a few views of the Ersatz variety:

Three seems to be a ration of pictures on this site ... it does not seem to want to allow more than that. Anyway, hope this helps. More later.

1Shirt----welcome aboard. Tell me about your name. Does it mean you have a fairly empty closet or perhaps and more likely a military reference? I had some 1st shirt experience in the Air Force and there are others here that performed the duty.

1Shirt:

If you mean the Swiss tool, I got it from Frank Binnendijk, a Swiss militaria collector in the Netherlands. He posts as "Guisan" on a few of the Swiss boards. His email is swissarmyspecialist@planet.nl.

The ersatz tool came from True Value Hardware. :-)
