I shoot a good bit of 2400 in a fairly wide selection of center fire calibers.

I'm down to about 4 lbs. or so. I felt like it was time to replinish the supply if I could find a decent deal. Seems like all reloading supplies are " out the roof " when it comes to price.

I went to the B'ham gun show this weekend.........Saw 2400 Powder at $ 178 for 8 lbs., $137 for 8 lbs. and finally found it for $123 for 8 lbs.( pays to shop around a little .....)

Thought I'd go ahead and get 16 lbs. of it ( two 8 lb. caddies ) . I get real good accuracy with 2400 in my .308 Win., 30 - 06 and 358 Win. with my cast bullets.

Here is a photo of 14.8 grs. of 2400 and the 358009 HP shot out of my Weatherby 358 Win. at 50 yards ( 5 shots )

Here is a photo of 17.5 grs. of 2400 with the 308 WIn. shot with the Lee 155 spire pt. sized .310 shot with my Hvy. barreled stainless Mauser 98 with the Leupold 6.5 X 20 with A/O.

I think you can see why I like 2400.......... ! ! ! No one powder is a " perfect powder", but in my opinion 2400 is pretty versatile.

It is also a great performer in the mag. pistol rounds.
A nice powder to have on hand if " hard times " come our way.................

It's a shame about Hazmat, I'd love to have a "powder exchange" thread to compliment the "boolit exchange" we have going on here. Have you tried it with any other calibers? (30/30, 30-06, or 223?)

Great in the 06' ( as I mentioned above ), probably would shoot cast fine in the .223 and 30 / 30 but I don't have any experience with those two.

I use 10-12 grains in a 30-30 using the lee 180 rn sized down to .309.
Honest 1" and maybe a tad at 100 yrds. 4x scope and I aint a super dooper benchrester either!!!
Same with 150 hard cast flat based comercial stuff.

Ben,
That is an excellent "hole"! Have you seen what kinda hole you'd get at 100 yds?
What is your twist rate?
That's the boolit I use on my 35 Whelen that has a 1:12 twist. Consistant accuracy from my gun is 1-1/2 inches at 100 yds with that boolit travelling at 2150fps.

How about 2400 for 30 carbine?
So with 2400 for 30-06 at 50 yards, you are basically making a 30 cal pistol?

2400 works great in .30 Carbine for both cast and Jacketed. With 2400 in a 30-06 you can get 30-30 factory velocities or better. I like to shoot 155 gr to 200 gr cast boolits in my 30-06 and for general target shooting I usually load to about 1600 fps, which is fun to shoot and very accurate.

Shuz :

My rifle will shoot 1 1/4 " - 1 1/2 group for 5 shots at 100 yards with this bullet ( 358009 HP ) also. I don't shoot mine as fast as you're shooting yours however. My 358 Win. Weatherby rifle has a 3 groove barrel with a 1 - 14 twist.

Would 2400 be better than say IMR-4350 or IMR-3031 in a 30-06 cast BOOLIT GC with the Lyman 311284?

I have an 8 pound jug of each for the .243 and 30-06 but no 2400.

JesterGrin_1 :

Hard to say, but you can bet on one thing..........It is certainly worth trying.

Some possible combinations to try in the 06' with the 311284 and 2400 are :

5 rds. with 16.0 grs.
5 rds. with 16.5 grs.
5 rds with 17.0 grs.
5 rds with 17.5 grs.

Ben, nice groups. I'd like to see a picture of that .308 Mauser, I've been contemplating a project gun along those lines myself. Any problems with the short cartridge in a long action? I've never had a full on BR gun but would like to. Is it that much cheaper than just buying a heavy Savage? No doubt it's more fun building a gun than buying off the shelf. Anybody building BR guns in 30-06 these days?

Work up to 16 gr. Mine likes it.

Here are some photos of my Mauser VZ-24, 308 Win. Mine feeds smooth as silk from the mag. box, some I've seen don't feed the 308 round very well. Never had a problem with mine with any shape bullet.

You wanted to see photos of my rifle , here they are :

In my Savage 340 bolt gun 30-30, 16 grains of 2400 under the Lee GC 170 FN gives me 1900 fps and more than usable accuracy. Standard primer and no filler, LLA or JPW tumbled.

GLynn41 :

I'm not certain that 2400 is going to be your powder in the 358 Win. if your goal is 2,000 fps.

For me, 2400 is at its best in the 1450 - 1750 fps. zone.

With heavy bullets using 2400 in the 358 WIn, as you approach 2,000 fps. you're going to be dealing with some high pressures.

Someone else can step in here and provide their thoughts on this subject.

You wanted to see my Weatherby , 358 Win., here it is :

Don't overlook IMR - 4895. Has always been a cast friendly powder for me.
