Long time lurker/new member I'm casting a 220gn out of wheel weights using saeco 418 mold swcbb, pan lubed with barry darrs recipes. These will be shot out of a ruger black hawk iron sights.
I inherited this gun and about 3 lbs of imr 4227 from an uncle that passed away. It wouldn't hold a pattern until I worked on the cylnder bore. Now with 8.0 of unique it'll hold about a quater size group off of sandbags at 25yds with these bullets.
I do have a scoped S&W mod 57 that I shoot with Cast performance bullets and win 296. I've taken deer out to 70yards with this setup been very pleased with it. With the ruger and iron sights i don't plan on going past 40 yards. I just like some suggestions where to start or proven loads.
thanks Justin

+1 what Felix said....

All the powders you mention, with the exception of Unique, have very much the same burn rate with only a slight difference in pressures. I've used them all in my 6" Mod. 57 with similar good results. I know you're asking about IMR 4227, but when that runs out you may want to try 2400. That powder has produced the best speed/accuracy combo in my pistol using 18.4 gr, an RCBS 220gr SWC and CCI 300 primers.

The 41 is a great choice as a deer hunting pistol IMHO. It's also refreshing to hear from people like yourself who understand the limitations and ranges of handguns for hunting. If we could all hunt from a bench rest those 100 to 200 yd handgun shots we hear about might be more practical, especially with open sights. In reality, the excitement, stress, awkwardness and rush of a real hunting situation make those kinds of 100 yd+ shots an undesirable and many times useless decision....

Welcome to the website!

I'd use up that 4227 if possible as well but it's never been my favorite ......

....... I'm more of a 2400, #9, H110, WW296, Unique or HS-6 sort of guy when it comes to .41 or .44s.

But when you already got it ......... USE IT!

And judging from your experience with Unique post throating your Ruger ....... you'll do well.

And a BIG WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys I apprecate it. I'll let you all know how it goes next week. My uncle was a die hard IMR powder man he used it in everything. I did set up my dads 44 mag super redhawk with 23 gns 4227 pushing a nosler 240gn jhp. Off the bench it done really well so I got another use for it there.
And thanks again
