Hello, i just purchased a new ruger flat top in 44 special. I would like some advise on loads for it. I will be using 250- 255 gr. Gs hard cast bullets with starline brass, unique or 2400 powder. I am most interested in accuracy over speed. I am at the age were i dont enjoy the recoil plus i dont want to stress the firearm. I have read 7.5 gr. Of unique is a good load but is over the recomended reloading data. Your thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. 7.5gr of Unique was/is the classic Skeeter Skelton load. He used that load in converted Old Model Blackhawks, which are the same frame size as the new .44Specials. So have at.

I have found in my own .44Spl BH that 6.5 and 7.0gr of Unique are more accurate than 7.5gr, at least with my alloy, so I don't use the 7.5 load much.

Well if it was me, I might shoot 7.5 grains of Unique in my gun, but only after haveing worked up to it. I sure wouldn't start there. Dennis

You BASTID! (Still waiting for my own flattop, after weeks and weeks...)

Today's Unique is a bit hotter. So is today's 2400. Work up from Start loads, as is the universal good advice. I'd start at about 6.5 Unique - and probably stay right about there for a mild and accurate load.
