OK this is one that I have played with for a fast twist 223 rem.
Would be great in a bolt action, but would have problems in a auto loader.
Push it along at about 1600 to 1800 out of a 8 or 9 twist.

Was looking at 70Gr's but this is about all the length I could
get in a Kimber SVT. And I don't really want to put more in the

Just can't believe there is not more interest in this mold. The availability of 22 Cal. molds is very slim and this is a good design especially with a hollow point. If you don't like 60 gr. just cast with lino rich alloy and you would be down around 50-55 gr.

Barnowl,
I have shot 60gr. jacketed in my 22-250 Rem. 788 with good results. However, every barrel is an enity of it's own. IMO, 60gr. is on the top side for a 1 in 14 twist. With that in mind, I have a Savage with 1 in 9 twist that will not shoot 60gr. very well, at least not yet. A good portion of the accuracy is based upon the load.

My Kimber SVT is a 1-9 twist.
I think you would have to push it
hard to get it to stabilize.

Back to school ,
it is not the weight of the bullet , BUT it's LENGTH that determind the rate of twist needed.
look at a box of 68/69 gn BTHP bullets it says 1-8/1-9 twist required, nor look at a box of Speer 70 gn Semi spitzer, NO twist requirements.
I've loaded the speer bullet in my 22 Hornet as a "ram load' for silhouette shooting, and I don't recall any key holeing at 100 yds, I've got some loaded up a 1-14 twist contender and will limit the speed to 2000 FPS, I'll report back with the results of speer bullet which is .75" OAL,, same as this bullets length.
I will add as others have said, each weapon is a world into it's self as to what each will shoot well

Have read through all the posts in the thread regarding twists, still not real sure if this one will shoot well through my barrel. TC Encore 223. TC website says 1:12 rate for that barrel. Any ideas as to performance?

Most custom barrel makers state that a 22 Cal. 1 in 12 twist barrel will stabilize up to 63 gr. bullets. They are talking jacketed bullets. IMO. if you cast hard and drive fast [for the alloy] they should shoot good. Of course your load and the condition of the barrel will be considering factors.
I have a dozen TC Encore barrels and almost all required lapping before they would group to my satisfaction. I am in on this NOE buy and I intend to load this boolit for my Encore 223 and 22-250, both 1 in 12 twist.

I just measured three of the Speer 70 gn. bullets,
1..797
2..794
3..797
Just a thought ,By useing the FP top punch from the 22-55FP or another FP TP, this bullet could be shortened just a bit, it probably wouldn't effect stability but would effect it's killing power
Wayne S
02-02-2010, 06:44 PM
Al,
With the Wt. of the 55 FP coming out at 58.7 to 59.2 out of WW , What do you Est. the Wt. of this to be ? and are you cutting these for WW alloy like the 55-FP ??
I'll load up some of the Speer 70's and see what they do at 105 Yds out of my 13" .223 Contender with it's 1-12 twist. Speet lists the load at 1720 out of a 24" bbl. so I'm guessing about 1500 +- from the 13" Bbl. ????

Little Doc,
You need to check the twist in your barrel BUT I think Rem. used a 1-14 twist espically when they were making the 788's.
The 1-14 twist is to slow for this .75" long bullet. your best bet is to keep an eye open for a mold that throws a 55 gn or less bullet

Wes,
The .224 bore Contenders all have a 1-12 twist, push them at 1900 fps or better and there shouldn't be a stability problem.
