My Lee 4-20 pot is a nightmare to get stable temps from... Gets too hot ... turn back a bit... still too hot... turn back again... temps start to fall way low...

The only reason I'm sure of this is the Lyman thermo...

Anybody any ideas how long this cycling takes to settle down before you have a stable temp? and how do you mange without a thermo - fly by the seat of your pants kinda thing I suppose?

I'm really tempted to go the PID route...

I've got the same pot and it's very temperature stable. The temp will vary as the pot emtpies, so you need to be aware of that. At one time I was having some temperature stability problems, and replaced the thermostat that's inside the enclosure and that fixed the problem. I purchased the thermostat from Lee Precision and it was very inexpensive.

Try looking here:

Might be more work than you want to get into at this point - but, it will fix your problem.

Yep, PID is the way you should go, just be aware of your thermocouple placement.

I turn mine on, set it to 9 until it hits about 750, and then turn it down until it clicks. That's it unless I add an ingot.
