Anyone know of a load for the 45 Colt using this heavy of a boolit that is safe for these guns? I am fairly new to casting, but I love it already. Started out with a Lee mold, but after 1 casting session(first ever actually) I contacted Veral at LBT Moulds and had some of his molds headed my way. I love the 325gr Keith and shoot it over 23gr of H-110 in my Blackhawks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you heard it before, but be careful having 2 vastly different loads using the same boolit. A 325 with 23 grains of H-110 accidentally loaded in a Colt SAA probably wouldn't be good.

8.0 grs. of Unique makes 845 fps. from my 4" barrel with a 320 cast. I would start a good bit less in a Colt.

I worked up to 8.5 grains of HS6 behind Lee's 340-grainer sized to .452" in 2 stages, was plenty safe in my New Vaquero, but I have proper sized throats and opened the forcing cone a bit. didn't want to push it much harder than that as the gun is no Blackhawk and I'm not interested in abusing it, just hurling big lead can be fun.

I wish somebody had the definitive answer for this one, other than "since the NEW Vaquero is built on a small frame, it must be weaker than a SAA Colt" speculation. If Ruger had made them for plinking with 200-gr. boolits they wouldn't have made the cylinder so long.

Just my 2 cents...

My new Vaquero and Uberti Cattleman both have .4525 throats and 11 degree forcing cones. Also not looking for magnum performance with this load, just maybe a little more oomph that 260gr cast SWC's over 8.5gr of Universal.

Just seems like a waste of lead to cast 260's when you can cast some real bullets.

Thought I'd bump this back up and see if anyone else has some recommendations.

Thanks!

A starting point might be in a manual under SAA loads. Or call John Linebaugh, he loves to talk about 45 loads. I'd start low and go up to the amount of recoil I want. Or don't want.

It's actually on the medium frame which is roughly the same size as a SAA, but Ruger tough.

try 14 grains of 2400 15.4 gives me 1100+ out of a 5.5 blackhawk with a 340 lee rnfp and is very pleasurable to shoot

I like 11 grains of hs6 with a 300

GearI'm puzzled by your comment, my understanding is that the New Vaquero's cylinder is shorter than the New Model Blackhawk's.
