Hey Troy, I read your other post and am happy to hear that you made the decision to buy a barrel for your Savage and keep the cast boolit train rolling. I am still in the apprentice stage myself, but have learned a lot over the past year. So far I have adhered to several principals the folks here, and the experts in books have taught. 1) I size my cast boolits .002" to .003" (for 30 cal and above) oversize. 2) I like to use light(er) charges of fast burhing powders 3) Do not try to drive them too fast!

Personally I feel that asking a cast 30-06 to shoot a deer sized critter over 200 yards (as in your previous thread) is asking way to much from it. A deer hunt usually represents so much more than just the second before the shot. It is months of preparing, scouting, gas money, reloading, testing, etc. etc. IMHO I would not try to spoil it by doing anything too risky and losing a wounded trophy! As long as your life does not hang in the balance anyway. Target shooting is a whole nuther beast...should be able to pop a paper plate a several hundred yards with enough regularity.

But you asked for some "good" loads in the 30-06 and here are some of the ones that I have used to good effect to date in my Remington 760, and Savage 110 in 30-06.

Boolit Saeco 316 (150 gr GC) I think that you could make my work her usuable for the Lee 150 or another of similar weight.
Powder Grns of Powder
4895 31 grns (for hunting)
4198 24 grns (for target)
3031 29 grns (for tagert work)
3031 38 grns (for hunting)

I sure hope that this is of some use to you!

My 06 likes the Lyman 311466 sized to .3015 and patched back up with 16# printer paper. I load it over 57gr AA4350.

Many loads I have made with the 200 grs Lee and 180 grs RCBS with 57 grs ACC 8700.
For 100 meter an accurate load. With VitoVu N110 , 28 grs gives an exelent result.
I have an good expirience with them.

Anneal the tips to make a soft nose for expansion, and go kill your deer at 200 yards.

Lyman 311284 gives the most energy for a lead boolit since you will probably be limited to a lower velocity. Try it with 40-45gr 4831. Works well in brush also.

I've got a 311466 and might try this someday... In the meantime, might I ask where you get a .301 sizer die? From what I've seen it's a custom proposition and the service of someone like Buckshot are in order.

Also, what do you do about sizing down that far and stability, or lack thereof, on the bands? Do they have any tendency to get all out of sorts? Does it really matter if they do?

Maybe I should take this to the PP forum...

lee will make one cheap.
magma will make one for a star,or buckshot/lathesmith can either make one or open one up for bout all them.
you just lose the lube grooves mostly and you ain't gonna use them anyways.

Hey Troy, I want to point out that I've never used a small-bore cast boolit to take a deer (only 44s so far), so take my advice with a grain of salt, but, here's what I'd do:

If I could guarantee a stable shot at short range (150yds tops), I'd be sure to use a flat-point cast boolit, like the 311041 or 311407, and I'd cast it out of WW+2% tin and water drop them. (I like the idea of tempering the nose to make it softer as talked about above, but I've never tried that, so can't comment on it.) I'd load that with 16grs of 2400, and practice by firing at least a couple hundred rounds from field-shooting positions.

If you think about it, I bet over a million deer have been taken with cast loads in the 30-30, and that's all you're doing with this load in your 30-06 is duplicating that. Stick with the self-imposed range restriction to ensure accuracy and highest possible striking energy, and you should be fine.
