I want to build a 300 Whisper. I need a action with a 223 size bolt face. It appears that I can get a Stevens 200 in 223, 1-9 twist with camo stock for about $325. I plan to keep the 223 barrel and have a new 30 caliber blank chambered in 300 whisper and use this gun for cast bullets. I will retain the option of switching barrel as the need arrises.

Is this rifle a good buy for the money. Are there better ways to achieve what I want to do?

Let me know your thoughts.

It's basically a Savage 110 without the Accu-Trigger. The strength is there as well as an accurate factory barrel, just a heavy trigger that a gunsmith could smooth out with a file and polish job.

I have handled one in 308 that had the trigger smoothed out. It was still heavy but broke cleaner with no hang ups. It was nothing to brag about in the looks department, but there are guys on another site that sanded down the stock and did some nice paint job and design on it. Guy was a coy dog hunter and used a 22-250.

There is no other option anywhere near the economy of the Savage lineup for the endeavor you want to embark upon.

I would study your trigger options ........ CLOSELY .......... however.

A dollar or three saved now might be regretted later .............

But your gun family pick is sound as can be.

I can only answer part of your question. I have a Stevens 200 in .223 and really like it. I think it is a good buy for the money.

I bought a Stevens 200 in .223. It is a tack driver for me. I put a Rifle Basix trigger in it for about $75 and could not be more delighted with the combination. In fact I bought a Stevens 200 in .308 because I liked the .223 so much. The rifle has one major drawback for me. I think the stock is ugly. But dang if it doesn't shoot.
