Just bought one cheap. Any suggestions on a good boolit and load?
I would also like to ask those that cast for this if I could try some styles of boolit that you all cast. PM me if you are willing.

Do a slugging first. These guns usually run large in the bore size. I got one I never could get to shoot. The other I had to work at to do something.

I checked my load log and I used 9gr. of Red dot and a 130gr. Lee lead bullet. This was with a filler. I could not get it to shoot good without the filler because of the oversized bore. Sometimes the fill acts kind of like a gas check and will help oversized bores some. I got it to go from hardly hitting paper to 1" at 25y. My bores ran .287 on the one I got to shoot and .289 on the one I never got to shoot.

I have a very nice one that has been "sporterized" to a degree and I also got it for a very decent price. The groove depth on mine is .287 which is on the tight side for most milsurp 7mms. I use an old original design RCBS 28-168-FN which with and alloy of 16-18 BHN drop out right at .287. I had a borrowed .284 sizer and only used ti the seat and crimp the GCs. I then double dipped the bullets in LLA and let dry. I loaded them over 28 gr 4895 with a 1/2 gr dacron filler. With the post front sight and aperture rear sight accuracy runs right at 2 moa at 100 yards. Alittle while back I got a .287 sizer but have not had time to cast any more bullets to test it further.

The wire wrapped around the stock is attached to the strain gauge for pressure measure ment. When done testing the wire are easily removed and the gauge is under the stock out of sight. I've also converted this rifle to cock on opening.

I slugged the muzzle and got .287. Anyone have a lee mold and what does it drop them at?

.............The RCBS 7mm-168 Larry mentioned is a good one, but is a bore rider and if the bore is worn it might not shoot well. My copy of that mould drops a slug at .285" with WW alloy and weighs 172grs with lube & GC. If that's the case then you'll want the Lyman 150gr Loverin, which (naturally they discontinued) works well in my M95 Chilean.

If I keep the speed down aorund 1600 FPS the Loverin works fine. The bore riding RCBS won't shoot for spit. I have a Brazilian M98/08 and a 1897 Rem RB in 7x57 (barrel says 7mm Spanish) that have excellent tight barrels. They'll both shoot the RCBS slug at close to design velocity, ie: 2400 fps.

I've been wanting to start a group buy for a fat heavy 7mm slug for sometime. The Lee 6 cav blocks aren't tall enough to make it worthwhile, and I wouldn't put a GB in their 2 cav blocks. Perhaps with the new mould makers we could cobble up a design?

You definately have my interest on that idea. My M98/08's bore slugs at .287" and the inside neck of a fired case mics out at .293"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:holysheep

BaBORE already has one in the works based on he and 45 2.1's most excellent shooting 8mm sil type boolit......maybe he can step in and update his progress.[smilie=1:

The RCBS mould I refered to was the original design, it is not a "bore rider". It is pretty much a Lovern design only with larger driving bands and fewer lube grooves.. It is a very good one and I suggest if you can find one you get it. It was listed as the 28-168-FN. Picture attached.

the newer one is not a f/p
it is their 145 silh. boolit with the g/c shank made into another drive band then the shank

...........Ah yeah Larry, that's different. Their 7mm-168 looks like a 311299. It's ALL nose :-)

I'll get with 45 2.1 and see what we can come up with.

How about a very fat 7mm version of the .30 SIL and 8mm SIL?

If you cant get enough people to make a buy worth while, you might check out mountain molds, and Buckshot, you could always make the size dies. Then you'd have what you wanted and still at a decent buck.
