View Full Version : Blackhawk 10.5" barrel?

...is that practical for hunting??

my local gunshop has a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum with a 10.5" barrel. Its massive. I mean, longer sight radius and higher velocities, sounds great for whitetail hunting in Ohio (with their ridiculous no rifle rule...) but would it be a little too unwieldy?? ...or has anyone hunted with one here?

...comes with a holster and matching belt, both leather. Factory grips. 450.00?

Thoughts??

Good price. Might depend on if you can focus on the front sight or not. At a certain age, that's a no-go.

Mine works well! But I installed swivel studs and made a neck sling from glove leather. Also it has a 4x Leupold scope.Good rig...FWIW.....Buck

That model was intended for silhouette shooting. My first hunting Blackhawk had a 7 1/2" barrel, and I found THAT unwieldy. You are pretty much relegated to a shoulder or cross-chest holster - or even a sling - unless you plan to carry it in your hand ALL the time. IF you can find such a holster, that is.

There's no denying the benefit of the longer sight radius, but the drawbacks more than outweigh it in my book. The added velocity (if any) is a moot issue in most circumstances. There isn't enough difference in drop or energy at typical handgun ranges to matter, IMO.

My good Ohio friend's dad, also a great friend, uses one and he's in his 70's. In fact he shot and harvested a deer with one of my cast bullets. Apparently he can see the front sight very well. He loves the gun.

TC contenders in Super 14's are a popular hunter. It's a personal thing though. Find a good way of carrying it and shoot it well and you won't want to lug a rifle anymore.

find a bandolier holster to fit slightly across your chest, you'll have both hands free, and it is the same OAL as the TC 14". both work very well for hunting! alot easier for hiking, you can use your haiking staff for a rest when needed, and with a body sling as described earlier, you can adjust it so you push out on the gun resting on you staff, and you can then with practice, take a longer shot with confidence.

FWIW...

Great to shoot...not so great to carry.

I put about 500 rounds through mine in a year and then it sat in the safe for quite awhile before I traded it on an MARLIN1895 Cowboy.

When I shot a lot of Met.sil, you would see a few on the line. Very accurate but for me, the 7 1/2" is about all I want to tote into the field.

I will never give up my 10-1/2". Being a primary hunting gun where you leave the rifle at home, I have no problems toting it around.

I'm picking up a 10-1/2" SBH tomorrow morning.
I'm more than a little curious to see what it (and I ) can do at 100 yards.
It has some sort of silhouette sights mounted.

I wouldn't have picked this as my only .44 mag, but I have other .44s and .45s from 3-1/2" to 7-1/2".

I bought a new 7-1/2" SBH Hunter in .44 a couple of months ago and have been having a lot of fun with it.
I like how easy it is to switch between optics and open sights with the Hunter and probably would choose it for hunting before the 10-1/2" for just that reason.

I have a Single Six 32 Mag with the 9.5" barrel. It's a pain, but it is a shooter. 5-6" is about as long as I want to play with.

Had one last fall that belonged to my shooting partner and I shot it for a few months. Darn thing shot like a rifle, especially at longer ranges but handled like a 105mm howitzer.

The long sight radius is nice but it's not a "carrying around" gun./beagle

If you are carrying it as your only gun on a hunt, how can a 10 1/2" revolver be harder to handle than a rifle with a 22" barrel? I hunt at times exclusively with a handgun longer than that. An XP100R is much longer.

Now if you are carrying a rifle and the pistol is along as a secondary arm then the 10 1/2" barrel might be a bit much for some folks. I would not see it as a problem either way. It's all personal preference.

Bret ya wanna sell or trade that 32 single six? I have a buck eye special dual cylender in 32 mag/32/20. It is a superbly accurate gun but I would prefer a 32 in the lighter single six. I also have a 5" barrel assembly in 32 cal for a single six ready to replace the 9 1/2". Lemy know OK Bud.

At that price I'm tempted to ask where the gun shop is! I hunt with a 16 1/2" .357 Max here in Iowa, also with a stupid "no rifles" rule, with some small exceptions late in the season in the southern tiers of counties. Is it unwieldy? Somewhat, but I describe it as more learning HOW to hunt with such a cannon than unwieldy.

Bret,
I bet that 9.5 32 mag is a sweet gun I have looked all over for one had to settle for a 5" fixed sight but still looking for the 9.5. I have the 10.5 44 RSB love it. I have a good leather shoulder holster making it nice to carry. I have taken 2 deer in Idaho with it.. J23 you might get a hold of sixgun member here, he has a lot of experience packing these hunts with them all the time.

Hunted with one for years, same with a 14" TC.

Never noticed a big difference, in fact I found it easier to hunt with it than a rifle in thick brush.

When I hunt with a rifle it is in my hands, not slung across my shoulder. Same with a pistol.

If I get tired holding it in my right hand, I switch to my left. I will take a 5# pistol any day over a 7# rifle for hunting in the woods, where my shoots will be less than a 100yds.

Kirb, GPC (Nurich) has barrels for under $50.00, more like $37.50 last time I looked. I thought this SSM might be something collectible with that long tube. I think "bizarre" is more the word! I've used it quite a bit but it feels like I have a sword on when I carry it.:bigsmyl2:

I used a 10 inch Ruger 357 max for hog hunting and it was awesome. No problems for me.
