If worse came to worse, could you cast bullets with zinc? I know it casts lousy, but how about a smooth sided bullet that was paper patched? I suspect that someone has tried it, and maybe even made it work somehow.

Zink alloy bullets have been tried. However, there are mechanical problems. You can damage the sprue plate just by trying to cut the sprue. Zinc is HARD!!

Further, zinc is much less dense than lead and suffer ballistically from this.

The NRA did a test on this during WWII. Rifle bullets weren't so bad as well as I recall.

As has been stated, there are problems, the basic one being the density. Then, there's the wear and tear on the mould.
