Canuk4570,

Wahoo, and congratulations! That is a very nice rifle and I am sure it will serve you very well in the field while big game hunting. I am glad for your good fortune, my friend!

don't want to turn the knife in the wound but here is the scope that I will be putting on it
its a nightforce 2.5-10x32 with a NPR-2 reticle
zero stop and expose turret to dial in for these long shots
took me a long time to save for this dream of mine
thanks guys for your support with the nice words

A Dream come true indeed.

Curious about your scope choice tho, I think I would have used a low powered Zeiss variable with a German #4 reticle myself. What's your reasoning, If you don't mind me asking?

How in the world do you do it? I hunted Canada once with a bow that cost me $89 and my friends up there told me the same bow would cost them $1000. That was the bare bow with nothing on it!

my scope choice was base on the reason that this reticle NPR-2 is divided in 2 inche bar and it has 15 of them
that said if you know about JBM ballistic site you are able to punch in any bullet weight speed
and so on and it give you exactly how to hold over at 100 yards in order that your bullet hits at any distance you want
example you want to hit the target at 175 yards and your bullet ballistic says 6.5 moa so you ether dial 6.5 on the turret or use the 3 bar and dial in .5 and bingo and this nightforce is compact compared to the regular nightforce and not to heavy...
hard to explain but I hope you understand

canuck4570
09-18-2009, 06:34 PM
yes you are correct on that but since our dollar has gone up almost par with the US
good time to buy.....

canuck4570

here is a ballistic chart for my 580 grain bullet at 1335 fps
press calculate to see it....
so if I want to shoot at a certain distance I just have to dial the drop in moa and my bullet will hit
you change speed well your make another chart and go superbe.... for cast bullet shooters..

Heck you could have wasted it all on liquor and wimmen like I did.

What was the old saying? I spent most of my money on liquor and women and the rest of it I wasted?

will be using this bullet, from a Paul's Jones mould
it 550 but had a few modification made by him and now cast 582 grain bullets
has a meplat of .300
has I sais no more gaz check for me so I will be shooting slower but heavier to compensate
with the scope mentioned above its easy to reach out to 300 yards....

that's the reason I bought it
95% of the year I shoot at the range and the rest hunting
the picatinny that is going on the rifle is made by Near and it has a 10 moa built in it
so the ellevation is about zero for 100 yard with a 1350 fps bullet....
if I go to Africa which I doubt I would use the sights for close range and scope for plain game

Canuck4570,
Here's something to contemplate. Since you'll be going sans GC, big and heavy and slow (582 gr. wow). think about getting one of those heavy things HP'd. it will aid expansion at those low speeds and since at that weight they're liable to go completely through anything anyway, might as well make a 2" diameter hole through stuff rather than a 1/2" hole.
By the way, what's the twist rate on that Steyr? is it fast enough for that long a CB?

hi canuck glad to see that i am not the only one that wanted a 450Marlin boltgun!! i built my gun on a savage 110 lh action. the load that i like is 330hp(457122)/55gr aa2230/wlr with a GC upside down between the powder and boolit. this load will do 2100fps form my gun and stay inside 3"at200yds. IMHO this will make a great whitetale load :bigsmyl2: Clint

1/20 twist
if you go to JBM ballistic they have a stability factor and it ok for that twist its a new way made by a certain miller and it is suppose to be much more accurate than the green hill formula
on the JBM their is god reading concerning this .... I have the book "applied ballistics for long range shooting by Bryan Litz who work's for Berger bullet and their is a chapter on this
also this bullet shoot very accurate in my ruger 4570 so it mus be correct
as for the hollow point there is a thread on cast bullet showing a drill press vice rig up to make hollow point Yes you can bet on it they will be hollowpointed....
thank you for advice

and on top of that you are able to use long bore riding nose
the mag in the Steyr is 3.125 inside length

You need a varmit bullet for that rig. Why not a 485gr PP cast of pure lead. No hollow point needed and you can go for serious velocity using jacketed data.

You oughta try getting some brass up here for the .45-110 and .50-140 Sharps cartridges. I'd love to get brass for a buck a piece. I'm looking at between $4 and $5 now that the US gov't has clamped down on brass exports.

They've just stopped shipping to Canada unfortunately. That's where I get most of my BPCR supplies. I was thinking of placing a big brass order this spring but never got around to it

I can use an exporter, but that'll make it expensive enough that I'd probably have to place a $500 to $1000 order for it to make sense. I've been thinking that maybe I ought to get into the BPCR importing business for Canada :-D

to get my scope back from leopold in the state I ad some import and export papers sent to me by Ottawa fill them out sent it back to Ottawa then they sent me back these papers with the government seal on them, sent the papers with the scope and no problem...
here is the phone number I had in Ottawa concerning these papers....
1-613-992-0478
explain to them what you want to do and they will help....
you don't have to be an importer to do it....
