I like the IMR 3031 with a #311041 cast in 50/50 ww/pb in my 30-30. However, I'm thinking of putting together a hunting load with that bullet for the .308. I haven't tried it up to now because the neck is so short on the .308. But now I figure it's worth a try. I got a decent deal on some IMR 4198 which I haven't used before and thought I might try it.
Is there anyone that has used both and has an opinion as to which might work out better?

i have used both in my 45/70, but not in my 30-30 (and i do not have a .308). in the 45/70, i much prefer the imr4198. better velocities, way cleaner burning. i dont know how much of that will transfer down to 30 cal, i would suspect it would be similar though.

No, either one would be good with most boolit weights. ... felix

As the old timers used to say, if you really want to know, you'll have to ask your rifle. The should both do o.k.

Well I tried the IMR 4198 with the #311041 GC in the .308. At 28.5 grains the 3 shot group became a large hole at 50 yards. Less powder gave me a fair group, but not impressive, and more began to open up fast with every half grain added. I'll load some more and see if it was a fluke or a sweet spot?

Yepper, try again around that load level, maybe with 5 shot groups and 0.3 gr steps. Them 3 shot groups'll lie to you.......

My 219 zipper likes 3031 but not 4198 (same case as 30-30.)
My 218 Bee likes 4198 but not 3031 (using same bullet as the 219)

Haven't started casting for my 30-30 yet to see which it likes.
