Hey Fellas..Just was wondering if anyone had a favorite powder for the 375 H&H for loads around 2000 FPS or so..I'm shooting the 375449..Ive tried unique with very good accuracy for low power stuff. Ive also tried 46 Grs of IMR 4895 (listed in the RCBS mannual for the 37-250 FN) but had VERY obvious hangfires...I am planning on an order next week for some surp powders, and was looking at 5010, 860 and 872 as a possibility for the H&H..

What do you guys thinK?

I'm using 4198, 4895 or 4064 in mine.

I had to go to Fed 215 primers as I was having hangfires with standard primers. Since then, no problems./beagle

Since this is a cast bullet discussion, I suggest that you slow it down a bit. Several years ago, I posted the same question. Ed Harris wrote me and suggested that I use Lyman's 38-55 bullet mold # 375449 no harder than wheel weights, no gas check, lubed with liquid alox on top of 14 grains of Red Dot. Its pleasant to shoot. If you sight it in for dead on at 200 yards it will be a bit high at 100 yards and dead on at 50 yards. He claims that this load has harvested many deer here in the US and plains game in Africa.
The key word in this formula is the lead be no harder than wheel weights. I always use Federal mag large rifle primers. You might want to slug the barrel first to check your barrel before you decide if you need to size the bullet. Lee will make you a bullet sizer for $25 to the size you want.

I use 377449 cast of WWs and water quenched to harden. With 36 gr of 5744 it runs 1852 fps. No wad or filler used with 5744. Not a bad load. Primarily I use 46 gr of 4895 with a 1 1/2 gr filler of dacron with excellent accuracy and no hint of a hangfire. Velocity is 2065 fps. For a little bit more oomph 50 gr of 4895 and the dacron filler run at 2200 fps.

BTW; I use a .375 RB lightly coated with LLA over 4 gr of Bullseye (no wad or filler) for 893 fps and 1 1/2 -2" groups all day long at 50 yards. Great for plinking, rabbits, squirrels, ptarmigan or grouse.

Yes by golly I do! These are more for hunting than plinking cause they do shove on the butt end a bit.
I use an NEI 320gn or an LBT 350gn both with the same load. A case full to the base of the neck with old (mil surp) H - 4831. Exact gn weight dont matter that much + or - a gn . Eather boolit is hanging right at that 2000 fps you mentioned. I use a Fed #215 for a good hot spark. Lighter boolits dont work so good with this slow powder. This load has turned in some realy impressive 100 yard groups.

Though not quite up to the 2000 fps you're looking for, I've gotten great results lately with the Lyman 375449, lubed w/ NRA-alox, sized to .377. Hornady gas check. These are loaded out long enough to just touch the lands in my Mauser. I'm casting 50/50 ww/Pb. No leading problems have been apparent. No "hangfires". No pressure signs.
1.) 28 gns. Blue Dot, WLRM primer.
Mv(ave.): 1806 fps

2.) 47 gns. WC846, WLRM primer .
Mv(ave.): 1834 fps.
(For reference purposes, I load the WC846 like Ball C2/H-335. )
Both of these loads are producing 50 yd. groups with "holes touching" from a rest.
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Don

VV N140 does it for me. 57 gr. gives over 2300fps with the NEI .375-280gc. N133 and N135 are good too.
