View Full Version : Anyone with quickload mind checking a load for me?

I'm working up loads for my 45-70 and I just ran this load.

45-70
BHA Brass (Black hills once fired)
CCI Large Rifle Mag Primer
45 Grains of IMR 4198
Lee 500 RNFP GC boolit - Lyman No.2 - Lubed with Carnuba Red
Lee Factory Crimped on the 1st drive band.
Seat depth is .60
(This is nearly 100% of the loaded case capacity from my measurements)

I was expecting ~1550 out of these loads in my nef handi, but the chrono shows 1825. 22fps ES over 8 rounds. No signs of pressure, primers show a bit of reciever imprint, but no flattening and recoil, albeit stiff, isn't unusual.

Can someone run that through quickload see if that's on par for what it should be, and maybe find what charge would bring it down to ~1550?

I need a more exact seating depth to really model the load. Seating depth is a Very large factor. To get close to 1825fps with that load requires 8% compressed load with a seating depth of ~ .70" and a pressure of 60000+ in a 22" barrel.

38 g gives ~ 1600fps with a pressure of 35000. That is a 92% fill. 36g gives ~ 1550 @ 32000 and 87% full.

Frozone. I put the wrong powder in. It was IMR 4198. Added seat depth too. It's .60.

60,000? Wow, those are nearly proof loads!

Lyman #45 reloading guide indicates a MAX load of 36gr IMR 4198 for a 482gr GC boolit, with a velocity of 1,567 FPS
IMR 4198 starting load is 30gr, 1307fps.

You were basically using a maximum IMR 3031 load with a faster powder. Dangerous combination!
For IMR 3031, sug. start is 40gr, 1451 FPS, max is 46 gr, 1677 fps.
The Lyman book suggested that the 3031 loaded near maximum gave the best accuracy; but work up to it slowly. The slower powder should make it more pleasant to shoot.
Keep in mind that this data is from 1970.

You might slug your barrel to see if you bulged it.

I figured that out! I could get nowhere close to a sane load using 4895.
That was the reason for the edit about an hour later ;-) I reran the sim with 4198 and got reasonable data.

Using a .60" seating data.
34g = 25500psi @ ~1450, 75%fill
36g = 28000psi @ ~1525, 80%fill
38g = 32000psi @ ~1625, 85%fill

Thank you very much Frozone. Can you tell me what 45Gr of 4198 shows for PSI/fill/fps?

Sent you a PM about the 4895.

45g = 51450psi @ 1786fps, 100.4% fill and all burnt at 12.5"
