A local gunshop is going out of business, and he is offering me ten cans of SR 4756 at four bucks a can. Question: has any body used this stuff in the 30-30 family of rounds and the 30-06 and 30-40 as well Any comments/suggestions? Thanks Mike

Mike, I just looked in my 3rd ed. of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. There is load data for this powder and the 30-30 as well as the 30-06, none listed for the 30-40. They obviously can't come up with data for every powder and cartridge combination. This will work in the 30-40 though. Burn rate is in the Unique territory. Handgun data is readily available as well. I have no experience with this powder but I'd be all over it at four dollars per pound if it has been stored properly [smilie=w:...Ray

What a deal! Grab it! 4756 is a lot like Unique. In small cases, most data makes it look a little faster, and the opposite in large cases. It may not be quite as flexible as Unique, and where there is a noticeable difference, Unique has grouped a little better for me. I would take all I could get at that price.

There are folks on other web boards who absolutely dote on 4756 for many uses. It's one of the very few powders I've never tried, so I can't give any personal testimony. But those who use it tout it all over almost anything in the Unique/BlueDot area.

I'd be on that deal in a heartbeat.

Its a good powder that falls about midpoibt in burning rate between Unique and 2400. It'll work in the 30-30 but probably better for light to almost medium charges as its kind of on the fast side...slightly faster than 800X. Its flexible and works well in pistol and smaller rifle cartridges. I've used it a lot for 45ACP but mainly in my 44 Mag...9.0 grains behind a 250 grain SWC for a good target load. LLS

My Lynan 45th edition shows many loads for the 30-06 and 30-40 for cast w/gas check; Velocities are upper side with pressures in the same area; Loads for 30 cal. M1 have data for lead and jacketed;
According to the burn rate chart, 4756 is faster than all the powders used for jacketed loads. Looks like this powder is the "Bullseye" powder for rifle loads.

When walmart decided to stop selling powders, we had dropped in one on a trip, and they had 4756 on closeout for $8 a can. I bought it all. Whish I had gotten there sooner.

$4 a can? Wow! I thought I had a bargain when I bought a closeout at $10 ea. I took the three they had (one can was the older flat can, so I got it for $5) and 2 SR 4759 at the $10 price. I have yet to try the 4756, so find this thread interesting.

"A local gunshop is going out of business, and he is offering me ten cans of SR 4756 at four bucks a can" You lucky dog you! I still load it in 20 ga with 7/8 shot loads, 12 ga with .690 RB loads and have used it in 38 special with 158 cast and notes show I shot some in 30/06 Dec of 2005, 200 gr lee, 12-16 grs sr 4756 1301-1548fps-+38F. Note says clean-accurate-28 ES-14.5 grs 1433-1 5/8" @ 100 yds 10 shot group! There is a star beside it in the book, must have piqued my interest, that day anyways????

I use 10.0 gr of 4756 with a 150gr cast in my 3030, it runs about 1400 fps and is a great plinking load @ 100 yds.

My wife did not like the recoil with factory loads with the 3030 so after a few calls around It was suggested 11.0 grs but I started with 10 and worked so good I have stayed it.

try it, I think you will like it.... my standard load for my 3030 Marlin

I've used SR 4756 since about 1964 or so. It's a great pistol powder, but I've never tried it in any of my rifles. I'm currently working off a 12 pound keg I bought in the 1980's. You don't see many 12 pound kegs anymore, since they can't ship them via common carrier.

Hope this helps.

Back in the dark ages after DuPont discontinued 4759 and before they were talked into producing it again they listed 4756 as a reduced load powder in their Handloader's Guide to Powders. I have that data if anyone wants it. Specific to this thread for the 30-30 they list 11.5 grains as max. for both jacketed 150 and 170 grain bullets, velocity is 1430 and 1335 fps. For the 30-06 180 grain jacketed, 18.5 grains max. and velocity is 1620 fps. No Krag data. Regards, Woody

I just bought a can of this, as it was among the few powders on the shelf locally. I figure that this supply shortage has at least gotten me to experiment with a few more powders, to know what could work in a pinch...or maybe find my 'the load'

Figuring on using it in 45 colt loads and maybe 30-30. Also heavy bullet 460 magnum if it seems right. There is probably a use for it in 38 spl +p loads too. Even 45-70 seems like it might like 4756

Any new contributions to this discussion?

Hey guys. I need to preserve my dwindling supply of rifle powder for hunting so I'm looking at using slower pistol/shotgun powders in .45-70. I'm looking for 1400-1500 fps with a 300 grain boolit in my Marlin 1895, I would think that a mild load like this doesn't need a rifle powder anyway. I have almost a full can of SR4756. I wonder how well it would work in the big .45? Any experience or suggestions?

Please check that again. 4759 is NOT 4756 I don't have a Lyman #49 but my #47 shows 26 grains of 4759 giving the 292 grain cast 1311 fps. Regards, Woody
