Barrowed a friends chronograph today. My 270 loads clocked right where my load manual predicted, but the 22-250 yielded unexpectedly higher results. My 22-250 load components are as follows

Barnes 36gr VG
37.8gr Varget (38.0gr is Max)
Full length sized Winchester brass
CCI 200 primer
2.340” COL

The chronograph consistently claimed these 22-250 loads to be flying between 4400fps and 4430fps. Is this really possible? The load showed no signs of excessive pressure and my 3 shot group (3 total shots) measured 2.5” at 300 yards.

How far was the muzzle from the screen?

How far was the muzzle from the screen?

15~18 feet

That rules out muzzle blast outrunning the bullets. Man, that's fast!

I usually am pretty bad at guesstimating distance, but I am positive the chronograph was not closer then 10 feet from the muzzle.

Them hot .22s cook right along. I've seen more than a few of them over 4,000fps before. We usually call them eargospliten-loudenboomers around here. I think that term was originated by P.O. Ackley, but some of my buddies & I sort of adopted it.

That speed is not so unexpected from that particular load, based on what I see in my Speer manual.

The 22-250 is a fast stepper no doubt about it.

This velocity doesn't seem out of line for the 22-250 so I would figure it as good.

I do know that muzzle blast can trigger screens and I go to great lengths to measure the distance between barrel and screen placement as well as having some "shielding" that pins to the to uprights I have at the front of my chrony.

This has worked well in keeping the screens from triggering before the bullet gets there.

I also take a 22 pistol and a box of standard velocity loads with me. these loads usually clock about 925 out of a 4 or 6 inch pistol more or less velocity and I go double check the chrony.

I will have to barrow that Chronograph again and make sure I have it the right distance from the muzzle to be sure. However it is not like it makes that big a difference, this load is safe, and accurate, if they really are flying 4400fps all the better!

If it is a chrony, or any model that unfolds, make sure it is unfolded all the way out flat.

I would retest. Both the 22/250 amd the 220 swift move but man 44 hunnert sounds kinda fast to me. Not impssable mind you but still pretty fast. I'd be interested inhearing more. Dennis

Yes, that kind of velocity is possible w/22-250Rem. Note the VERY LIGHT 38gr projectile- this round is more usually loaded with 55grain projectiles, where it will safely generate 3600fps all day long. Super velocity is the rage these days, but you will notice the projectile slows down awful fast as well.
Don't even try shooting 38grain loads on a windy day- they will be all over the place in no time at all!

Formerly a serious varmint hunter- I got over it, and now shoot virtually nothing at all under 30 caliber, mostly 35 and larger! Still got a few tackdrivers, though!
222RemMag does it all!!!

2nd, I got 4480fps with the same projectile out of my 22/250Imp using AR2206. Groups in the area of 10 inches at 300 meters kinda dampened the enthusiasm though. I still have some of those projectiles left and I was going to try them with AR2208, If I can get the same accuracy as you got, I will be alot happier.

its 10 % higher than projected by quickload......seems a little hot....but if you say no sticking bolt, no gross flat primer...it might just be possible and safe....BUT it it won't hit anything oh well.

Barnes own data on their web site claims 40.5 gr BLC-2 at 4348 fps and 40.0 gr RL-15 at 4417 fps from a 24 inch 1:14 twist barrel. Too bad the BC is so low. I'm sure wind bedevils shooters with this bullet at distances of 200 yards and greater. I can't believe you guys didn't look to the Barnes web site for info on this question.

I have some of the 36 and 50 gr versions, and some of the Barnes MPG bullets (similar) I intend to work with in my .223 AR. I should be good out to 300 yds, and the 1:9 barrel will spin them up good for terminal performance.

With 2.5 inch groups at 300yards, I'd say you have a SMOKIN' great load!
