CB for .35 Whelen?
Anyone cast/ load a CB for the Whelen?

I'm putting a 98 mauser together in that chambering and would like a recommendation for a mid weight CB to load for Whitetail deer and practice for bigger game (elk someday if I save up the $).

Thanks for any suggestions, recommendations and /or loads (or even reference to load manuals I can look in).

CBs work great in a 35 Whelen. i've used RCBS 35-200-FN and a Lyman 3589. on the group buy section they're getting a 3589(358009) group buy together. if you're thinking of CBs and 35 Whelen, i'd suggest you get in on it. i was just commenting on my use of the 3589 with a friend tonight. have a target i saved. 5 shots with the 3589. 1.25" group. 4 clustered really tight, 1 about an inch out. those darn fliers (LOL). anyway, my 35 Whelen is a rem700C so has a 1-16 twist. don't let anyone tell you its too slow to stabilize a 3589. (the 3589 mould casts a long RN CB of about 275 to 285 gr. weight, depending upon alloy). the load notes indicate 60 gr. of 4350. no slouch load. i've found a fascination with 35 cal. rifles, mostly for hunting. the smaller bores kick less and use up less Pb for casting and such, and are fun to shoot too, but the 35s make very good hunting calibers, particularily for use with CBs. Also with all the 38/357 moulds out there, you can come up with a number of lighter loads that will not kick much at all and yet make dandy utility loads. others have reported good success with the Saeco 245 gr. 35 caliber CB. I haven't tried it yet though. i see no reason why it wouldn't be great too. Since the RCBS 35-200-FN and the Saeco 245 gr. bullet are catalog items, i'd first get in on the group buy for the 3589 while you can. then later you can get the other two. the Rem 700C in 35 W has a 1-16 twist. not bad at all for CBs. many who put an aftermarket bbl on their rifle for 35 Whelen choose 1-14. the 358 Win uses 1-12. i suspect a 1-14 is a good compromise, though i've not had any issue with the 1-16 twist in my Remmy at all. my 358 Win works well too at 1-12. i think you'll really like the 35 Whelen. they are very effective on game, and shoot about as flat as a 30-06 with 180s. that isn't bad. the only downside to the 35 Whelen, that i can tell, which i suspect is why it isn't way more popular, is that it kicks a tad as compared to a, say, 308 or something. for as effective as it is as a hunting caliber, the recoil is the only reason i can figure out for it's modest popularity. anyway, have fun with it.

I have a Marlin XL-7 in 35 Whelen with a 1/14 twist.

I'm shooting 180gr cast boolits out of it at 2400 fps and getting good accuracy. 3 shots into an inch or so at 50 yds and then the same load into two inches at 100 yds.

I also have a 358009 and it shoots well too.

I'm currently working on about 3 or 4 different boolits to test in my whelen. :)

those 180gr boolits kick dang near as hard as the 280gr boolits. :) Of course I'm going full throttle too. I'm sure if I backed off I could get a nice "mild" hunting load.

For now, my testing is to see what the max velocity I can get one up to. :)

I feed cast to my 35 Wellen
The 360-220 GB I ran , now avaible from BRP Custom Molds is a great shooter for a lighter boolit
I also use the RCBS 35-250-SP with a soft nose for deer
The 358009 ran a while back shoots great
But I just said yes to the GB for another single cavity 358009 , but HP'ed

I use one of the 360-180 GB pistol bullets to plink with

My Savage will put 3 in 2" at 150 yds with ME shooting with most bullet weights from 220 - 280
I have seen it shoot a lot better with better eyes

Hi, I have been loading and shooting the Lyman 3589 in the 35W for a while now. I had a Winchester 1917 with a bad bore rechambered for it with a 1:12 twist. My mold is an old single cavity and drops WW casts at .359 and it weighs around 292 grains. I've been up and down the scale with several medium powders and settled on IMR 3031. It has a good loading density and gives me good accuracy in everything from moderate to just under max. I use moderate loadings for target at 100 yards; its not a tack driver but is a joy to shoot. Aging eyes are happy with 2-3 inch groups. There are probably a lot of other powders that will work as well or better than 3031. If used for hunting with this heavier bullet one can easily take on anything-anysize in the western hemisphere, but with higher loadings the recoil is a lot more noticeable. The 358(00)9 is an excellently designed bullet for the 35W and can give good performance. A good general starting reference is found in Cartridges of The World by F. Barnes. LLS

4 accurate loads that work in my GEW98 35 whelen with a 1/14 twist firelapped Shaw heavy taper barrel in descending order of accuracy.

All loads are fully prepped and made from 1X fired annealed RP .270 brass.

Opened to 35cal with hornady tapered xpander, fireformed 1X , necksized, then uniformly trimmed and then flared with modified RCBS 357max Flare (M-die).



Alloy is a 24+BHN tough yet mallable alloy consisting of WD'ed 50% Pure/ 50% WW +5% nickel bearing railroad babbit.


Lube is a soft microcrystalline wax based version of the old Lithibee recipe.



#1 BRP-CUSTOM 360-220 over 54.0 grains of H-4350 (sub MOA) (This years whitetail hunting load)

#2 BRP-CUSTOM 360-220 over 52.0 grains of H-414 (use a mag primer) (1.25 MOA with thrown charges)

#3 RCBS 35-200 over 50.0 grain of Rel 15 (use mag primer) (would be a nice meat friendly whitetail load 1.5 MOA)

#4 RCBS 35-200 over 52.0 H335 ( mag primer) (My practice/fireform load as I have large amounts of this powder) (1.5 MOA with thrown charges) (This load also gets used with 180gr BRP custom 358430GC's with 1.25 MOA accuracy)

I've only hunted with jacketed in the 35 Whelen so far; it has been very effective on deer.
For cast I've been working with the Saeco 352 245gr boolit in my Remington 700. Paper patched, from ACWW, I'm getting 2650 fps, using Rl15 powder. Good load but paper patches don't work well with my muzzle brake. (not dangerous but ruins the accuracy)

I love my Whelen.

I got more useful, firsthand info by asking just one question ofthe right folks (that'd be yall) than I'd learn in a week's worth of reading manuals and articles!!! (I'll still read the manuals for safety sake and for piece of mind,

but wow, wow, wow I'm in the right place to pick up some good advice- I hope that I can offer something to the forum as I learn more)
