Despite the fact I feel like crap I just had to test some more of my first castings.

The load to be tested this time was 13.5gr of Accurate No. 5.

First off I want to say getting old and out of practice sucks. Back in the mid 90's I could make 7 yard groups with this 629 Classic you could cover with a nickel.

Here was the first group. For reference the black square is 2" by 2":

Then the second:

Then I decided to try double action. Using a 100 yard rifle center so the big circle is 3 inches:

Then I backed off and tried 25 yards slow fire back on the 2" black square again. The low one was breaking the trigger just as I let the front sight dip a bit. I only had 5 rounds left so that's why there are only 5 holes.

Then I had 6 rounds of the 296 loads that the collet puller simply couldn't get enough grip on to pull apart when I was tearing them down the other day. One of them was 22.3 grains and the other 5 were 24.3. The lighter load was first and is that flyer on the right. The heavier loads went into that tight group and I managed to blow one shot as you can see:

That was all of my cast stuff I had loaded. I looked at the muzzle in the bright sunlight after each group. I kept getting more and more light gray wash to the point the bore looked frosted after the last group but it never built up any thicker.

Then I decided to try a cylinder of those commercial cast I have over 24.5 grains of 296. This is a lot closer to what I remember being able to do except I jerked the trigger on one shot. Have to remember not to hurry when I get the good sight picture. Still at 7 yards.

Funny thing is after this group the bore looks cleaner than it did before I fired it. It's like these rounds took some of the gray wash with them. Or else just laid more power fouling over it. Won't know unitl I clean.

What lube did you use on your homecast?

I only have 25 to play with in the back yard and I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.

Back when I would burn 50 rounds a week on average I could make 50 yard groups you could cover with your palm and consistiently go 6 for 6 on gallon milk jugs filled with water at 100.

That's iron sighted. Not scoped like the ones in your avatar.

LLA. It's all I have at the moment.

I didn't need to size these and don't own a lubri-sizer.

But I don't use a scope, they are 4 minute red dots!

What brand, BTW? Been thinking about playing with one of those.

Yeah, well, we all know we can't compete with the expert! You give us all something to aspire to. How are you at pool? I might be able to top you on something...[smilie=b:

Same, same, single focul aiming point, either scope or dot are just easier to shoot, but then you know that, it's why you have them. I agree though, shooting groups @ 7yds really tells me nothing aobut the gun, load or shooter. Your 25yd groups are about as good as my old eyes will shoot anymore w/ open sights. Of course, if I cheat & go scope from a rest, then I can do that @ 100yds.[smilie=p: The 44mag in 3"-8" format one of my fav. caliber for hunting, met.sil. or even plinking.

Guys who think their 25-yd load will do well at 50 yards with just adding a scope or red dot are in for a surprise. Prove me wrong over at Wheelguns and Handcannons and show me some of those targets. [smilie=l:
