Anybody know where I can find the dates of manufacture for a rifle if I have using the serial number for Remington Model 700 in cal. 270? I Googled it and could not find it.

It may be in the back of the Blue Book of Gun Values.

There should be 2 letters as part of the serial number. If you tell me what those 2 letters are I may be able to tell you date of manufacture.

I sent Remington an email with my number and they returned the date in a couple days. Bill

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

Month Codes: [first letter]
B - L - A - C - K - P - O - W - D - E - R - X
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.


The following serial number information is for
Remingtion firearms manufactured between 1921 and 1972.
Remingtons manufactured between 1921 and 1972 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. The following letters correspond to the months of the year, for example B=January, L= February and so on:
B - L - A - C - K - P - O - W - D - E - R - X
The following letters correspond to the year of manufacture starting in 1921 and ending in 1972:
M - N - P - R - S - T - U - W - X - Y - Z - A - B - C - D - E - F - G - H - J - K - L - MM - NN - PP - RR - SS - TT - UU - WW - XX - YY - ZZ - A - B - C - D - E - F - G - H - J - K - L - M - N - P - R - S - T - U - W

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

The last time that I needed a Remington Manufacture Date I called them and they told me over the phone. Unlike any other Co that I'm aware of plus, the info was free.

The call was short & quick, whether it was a LD or 800 call I do not remember.
