I am out of 2400 powder, but i do have 296. Does anyone have a load recomendation for my 44mag with the 429421 boolit and my federal cases? The gun is a redhawk, and im looking for a medium full power load.

Plenty of load data for 296 available to you.

296 load data should not be reduced. So if you're not wanting to shoot full power loads, 296 may not be your choice.

Unique is the best "medium" power level powder I've used for the 44 mag. 10 to 11 grains is very firm recoil wise, 8 to 9 grains just about right for most "Beginners".

296 is strictly a "full throttle" powder do not reduce from manual data.

I load Lyman's 429421 with 16 grains of Blue Dot.

HeavyMetal has it right again! Unique is the way to go for everything except absolute full power loads. Light to medium loads are what it is made for, and it's usefullness extends from pistols to shotshells to cast bullet rifle loads.
Unique is quite flexible, and it even reminds you to clean your gun after shooting, as it does leave behind a dirty gun (at least the OLD Unique did, I hear the newer stuff is cleaner!).
Remember, this forum is a great place for exchanging information, ideas, sharing knowledge, but beware of using loads that you have not personally worked up to safe levels in your own firearm!
Always exercise caution, and keep lots of Unique on hand- it is your best friend!

I second that...
10 grs. Unique will give a solid load with plenty of thump - over 1000 fps depending on barrel length. Accurate too. I used it on silhouette chickens - bowling pins too in the '80s but it had a mite too much recoil to be competitive on pins. It would take pins off the table for bloodybygawd sure with any solid hit though...

My full-power load with 296 is 23.5 grs. Goes over the screens in the high 12s - near 13 - from my Super Blackhawk.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget about Herco. It's like Unique with longer legs.

I should not have used the word "medium" in my question and i am not a "beginer". Thats what i get for typing at 4:30 AM instead of sleeping! Only one of my load books have 296 data and its for jacket loads and even though some say its the same i figured i would ask. Even the data on the Hogden site is for jackets. What i should have asked is, Does anyone have starting and max load data for 296 in the 44mag with the 429421 cast boolit.

Lyman 3rd edition Pistol and Revolver handbook has the following load for H-110.
H-110 and 296 are one and the same powder according to many sources I have read.

Caliber: 44 magnum
429421 boolit
1.710" OAL
H-110 powder
Large pistol magnum primer
Starting load: 24.0 grs. 1218 fps 31,900 c.u.p.
Max load: 25.0 grs. 1301 fps 35,300 c.u.p.

Based on my experiance with 296, would say go get some 2400, it is a much more friendly and versitile powder for a lot of ctgs. Other than that I would (if I had to opt otherwise) go with Unique.

I've gone as high as 25 grains of 296 with RCBS 44-250-K in my Blackhawk, but that's pushing it. I'd recommend 23.5 to 24 grains with a 250 grain Keith SWC.

I don't like pushing the upper thresholds with Unique. In my experience it gets a little squirrelly, so 10 grains is a practical max for me. As nice of a load as 10 grains of Unique is, I actually prefer 12 grains of Power Pistol. It's a little hotter that the Unique load, but 10 - 11 grains of PP is fine if a guy wants to stick closer to the 1000 fps mark.
