I was looking around for loads for the 9mm and found a load calling for 6 gr of Unique for a 125 gr LRN

I have two questions, One, is 6 gr too much? It seems kinda high to me.

2, I have 124 gr bullets, would a load for a 125gr be safe to use for the 124?

Sorry, I'm new at this.

I have two recent load manuals one is a Lyman 49th edition the other is a Hornady 7th edition. For 125gr bullets both list a max charge of 5gr of unique for 9mm. So yes your data does seem a little high. As to your question about substituting a 124gr for a 125gr, yes you should be fine. Just fallow all standard loading precautions, start out with a midrange charge and work up to maximum (only if you feel the need for maximum charges.) Also watch your C.O.L. Don’t feel stupid about asking questions on reloading, better safe then sorry. By the way that was a good question.

Most load manuals fluctuate a little on their listed minimum and maximum. Always go with the newest data, and then the one that is playing it safest (lightest max load). My first concern is safety fallowed by accuracy. I first experiment with charges that fall within the safest load manual. Only if I am having poor results with accuracy and NO signs of excessive pressure do I go to the next manual with slightly higher load data.

Well thanks for the help.

Yeah, I was looking at the loads listed for different powder and on only one other powder did they list anything near that load.

Gonna have to work up a good load on these.

Lyman #45 shows for Unique, 124gr J-word, 5.8gr max, 121gr cast 6gr max. Looks like they revised it downward very significantly as per 2ndAmendmentNut's post.

The load info I gave you was for a LEAD round nose bullet. Don't know about the other recommendations. I kept this manual because it lists loads for LEAD bullets.

When you work up a load for your gun, with your brass, your primers, and your bullets, DON'T start part way between the minimum and maximum recommended loads. Start at the minimum and work up. Just cuz' you've always done it and nothing bad happened, doesn't mean the next time the gun won't come apart with pieces of you with it. These ain't pop guns and once you pull the trigger you can't take it back.

I load this boolit primaraly with 231. But on occasion load it with 5.4gr of unique.
Lees 2nd edition, 125gr lead boolit 5.3 start, 1106 fps. 5.5 max, 1139fps
It leaded my brl a little bit but I think that had todo more with the lubeI was using.
