I finally got lucky and retrieved one of my Lyman #311041 cast bullets that I had shot from my Winchester 30-30. It went into the rifle at .309 and came out of the sandbank at .570, so I guess half w/w and half pure lead works rather well for expansion. It had mushroomed back to the top band and had lost only 1 grain of weight, which I'm guessing may have been the lube. Maybe I will try hunting hogs with some of those?

Surprised but no doubt pleased.

With the 50% Wheelweight / 50% Pure Lead bullet that is going to be used for hunting it is a good idea to water drop them from the mold. This will produce boolits that are 20-22 BHN, but not brittle. You can push them easily up over 2000 fps and still get expansion; but when then encounter heavy bone they will not shatter,

Hope this helps,

One of the websites, and I don't remember which, had picks of slugs retrieved from game animals. .30-30 was one as well as several handgun slugs, .357, .41, and .44 mag.

All had mushroomed out beautifully with alloys very similar to 50/50.

I read a report in an old Handloader (or was it Rifle?) Magazine where the author had worked through all kinds of alloy mixes and hardening, etc. to get the "best" cast game bullet for his 35 Whelen to hunt elk with.

After all of his testing, he settled on straight ww (with a little tin IIRC) alloy - air cooled. This was 200 grains going 1950 fps. Again IIRC.

He found that they expanded reliably but in a controlled fashion.

He then went out and killed a bull elk with one shot. ;)

I would say that your load will be just dandy for hogs though - if it held together going into sand, it should be just fine with "hog" :)
