After reading some of the comments on this mould it was with some trepidation that I fired up the old pot. The finish and machining of this mould is beautiful and when the alloy of #2 finally got up to temperature I began...

My fears were unfounded.

After dumping the first 2 casts it started to produce perfect boolits. I found in no harder to cast with than any other mould that I own (including my Mountain Mold 215gr. 7 band .311" boolit). They measured .3143 and average weight was 168.6gr.

Great job Al!

This is the result of only 30 minutes of casting. The storm that's keeping me landlocked is pouring rain.

Those are some pretty boolits! If the quality of the mould is anything like the quality of your boolits then it must be one fine piece of equipment. How about post a few pics of your mould.

Ditto......Ditto to above. I am getting oal 1.030/178gr w/oGC/.3145-.315. Fully dressed with lube & GC=182gr.

Shot side by side w/Lyman 314299 the the 311407 shot a little faster, as expected since it's lighter(about 20fps), but shot more consistant on the chrono and grouped a little tighter @100 & 200 yds. Shot in SMLE w/4759 @2000fps.

I got in at the tail end of this buy, and almost missed it.
Thanks Al,

Jo

The original 311407 Mod we did ran .302 on the top two band and the rest ran .313 - .314. Are the top two bands on your mold smaller than the others or are they all the same size.?

The top 2 bands measure .3017".

That is doing it right. The original Lyman molds were inconsistance as to the top two bands. They were smaller than the rest but only by a couple of thou .305 - .306. This worked fine with a worn throat, but in an unworn throat shoved the base of the bullet way down into the boiler room with the fire.

I started sizing the top two bands of my 311467 .301 and letting them ride the lands and that solved the problem of deep seating and accuracy was better.

So, when I speced the originalv 311407 I carried that idea on to our design. I am glad to see it reamains in the various incarnations of the design.

I just got done casting 200+. With alloy temp at 800 - 850 I had no problems at all. Just a pile of fine looking bullets in no time. Overall an excellent mould I couldn't be happier with. Now for a range session. :Fire:

I lubed with a .314" sizer die and loaded up some 7.62x54R for my 91/30 which has a bore dia of .313". I set up my lubrisizer to lube the first 6 of the 9 lube grooves (I'm counting the one just forward of the gas check). The first (and very short) range session showed decent results at 50 yds with no leading. (I was using 3031. Didn't chrono, but was probably about 1900 fps)

More testing to follow, but my question is how many lube grooves are you guys lubing? Any sweet spots?

On a Loverin style bullet, I lube the grooves that stay inside the necks, whatever that number is. The rest are bare. I have never had any problems doing it this way.

I know I screwed up not getting in on this buy! It loks a lot like my SAECO #315.

It's taken me months to try out this bullet... just too many projects I guess.

The bullets were cast from isotope pigs and sized to .311" for the fat and worn bore of my 1903A3 Springfield NAR Match rifle.

I was using 10 grains of Trail Boss in LC cases, sparked by Remington 9 1/2 primers. In addition to the 311407s, I also loaded up rounds with 311291 sized to .311" and NEI 150's sized to .312".

Both the 407's and 291's shot well, that being about an inch at 50 yards. Considering it was 33 degrees and a nasty wind blowing, I was pleased with the results.
