I recently started casting for centerfire handguns and have had good results with tumble lube bullets. I now want to cast for my 45-70 and have read here about Ranch Dog moulds but they seem to be no longer available. My questions are : Can you use a gas check bullet without the gas check if velocity is kept down or does the undersize base ruin any hope of decent accuracy? Also are there any other sources for tumble lube bullet moulds of reasonable quality? I'm looking for something in the 350 gr range to be used in a Marlin of recent manufacture (Ballard rifled)

I use unchecked gas check designs in mine for all low power loads. I don't get any leading and accuracy is ok for plinking. There may be some .460 diameter ranch dog designs available in the future from LEE. At present I don't know of any inexpensive solutions to your mold needs.

Hey mate,

I am getting this group buy going for a mould for a 45/70. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=56245

Post #19 is the design we are going with, No GC.

As for using a bullet designed for GC with not using a GC. Why dont you get a No GC bullet and use soft GCs when you want to run some speed. From what I read you can run faster with a soft GC than none at all but not as fast as a propper copper GC. A soft GC is a wax card which you place over the mouth of the case when seating the bullet and the case cuts a wax disk the correct size for the base of the bullet.

I'm no expert, I have little experience but I read alot.
