Why do y'all like it so well? Is it because of the cost-effectiveness, or because of the accuracy, or because of its plinkernicity?

I've just shot my 30-30 for the first time in 20 years. I've only been casting for a few months now (all handgun), so I naturally want to cast for this 336 for a little fun target shooting. I've been debating on whether first to buy the Lee soup can or the Lee C309-150-RF.

Next up: Skinner sights for it!

Yes to all 3. It is cheap, shoots well, uses little lead and appears to have much the same design as a LBT WFN.

I suggest the Lee C309-170-RF OR one of the new group buy Ranch Dog copies AND a soup can.

Ive shot some samples of the soup can in my 336 and accuracy is on par with the other boolits I have shot nothing exceptional so far. I also have the 150 fp from lee and its no slouch either even unchecked ahead of 5.5 grs. of Bullseye I can hold baseball size 10 rd. groups with it at 60 yds. I'd say get both!

I don't know about plinkernicity being a reason, but I sure like the word.

I haven't been casting long, so haven't used the Soup Can enough to decide anything about it's shooting (except that it makes nice clean holes in targets) but I know what I like about it so far:
It casts so easy.
It was one of the first moulds I used and it spoiled me. Being new, I was trying to figure out things like how many bullets I could cast per hour and this mould got me optomistic. I was casting as fast as I could dump the alloy, swing the sprue cutter, and dump the bullets. Bang, bang, bang, I was doing that at least six times a minute, getting good bullets no matter what, and thinking this was how it must always work.
I was in for a surprise.

Sorry fellas, but what is a "soup can bullet" ??????

I shoot the 150 gr Lee in my 94 win. With Trail Boss it's proved to be loads of plinking fun.

I would like to know the mold # for this class of bullet. Both for 30 cal, an 7mm's
Thanks Kevin

Gents this is the stock Lee C309-110-FP and can be had in a double cavity Job for around $18 US dollars. There have been several group buys from Lee for six bangers. Two that I recall (Jr.'s was the one that I got in on :-)) that were 0.311" and one that was 7mm. May be time to get another custom buy going for the multi-cavity soup can.

Guys, thanks for the great responses. Lots of good info. That six-banger sounds like one I'd want.

I'll probably buy this one first and then get the 150-gr or 170-gr mould later. I'm a fan of shooting small boolits (many per pound) to make my lead last longer and reduce costs. I've seen references to this one quite a few times.

Oh, "plinkernicity" -- my made-up word to denote the quality of being great for plinking!

It's just a fun little boolit, very much like the famed Lyman 311316. It's got plinkernicity, that's for sure, and it makes a great small game boolit. I'm particularly lucky as my 6 banger throws boolits that my K-32 Smith loves. They should be too small, but I got lucky.

This is great boolit. I'd recommend it for any 30 cal rifle.

Thanks Kevin

The 7mm soup can comes in a box that says "7mm soup can". It is a special order from Mid-South. I ordered one and a Bator 22 from them last Nov and asked to hold the order till both arrived. They got here last week.

There is a group buy going on now for a modified 311316 lyman copy. It is going to closeon 8/17 if I read it right. If you want more than a 2-cav. you might want to take a look at this buy.

It's a great little bullet. Shoots accurately to 2,700 f.p.s. in my 336A micro-groove .30-30.
