The weather in Western Pa finally turned decent today and I spent a couple of hours at the range. I happened to glance into the garbage can and noticed two empty cartridges with the primers backed out. I figured someone had a headspace problem until I looked at the body of the cases. Seems to me that someone fired two rounds of .308 Winchester out of an '06. I can perhaps see one round by mistake but two????????????

He had to fire 2 because the first one made such a good group. Perfectly obvious to me.....

Never under-estimate the unknowing!

I once saw FIVE .308 Winchester cases which were fired in a .308 Norma Magnum rifle, and my, my....it's amazing how far a case can stretch without rupturing.

The rifle was a custom job, and the caliber marking just said ".308 N.M.". Now obviously a .308 is a .308 is a .308, right? The guy brought the rifle and empties in "to see why the shells look funny....".

Keep hanging out at the range. In a few years the idiots that were born today will show up eventually.

At least he didn't pound them into his Model 740 270! That makes a nice explosion.

I have seen few of those too.One fellow fired several .308 in his 7.62x54R,and was wondering, why case extraction was bit difficult.Other fellow fired .308 in his
.270,and the gun didn´t explode.Luckily the load was very mild practice load,with 100 gr bullet.Not to mention .243 in .308 or .270 in .30-06.

One time a few years back I bought about 15 boxes of Rem 30 06 180 grain corelock.

In one of them boxes from the factory I found a 270. I checked all the rest and they were ok.

Probably wouldn't be a problem (270 in a 30 06), but the other way around!!!!!

Also had some Federal 7MM Rem Mag, new in the box, the belt on one of them would not let it chamber. It was about .005 wider then the rest of them. Hornady made it right, swapped me a box and a half of the 7mm stuff for 4 boxes of the then new 350gr 45's they developed for the 450 Marlin. And they paid shipping both ways!

The factory does think....alittle....a 30-06 won't chamber in a 270. Alot of the rounds are engineered to not chamber in similar cartridge family chambered rifles...like the 308 family.... Now that they have the 243, 260, 7mm-08, 308, 338-08, and the 358. Doesn't do any harm really firing say a 243 in a 308 chamber. Sometimes these won't even work do to shoulder angles and placement.

They can't be totally idiot proof though.

KTN, that incident reminds me of another caliber challenged shooter I and a few of my friends met one day. The three of us were hapilly banging away at the pistol range when his wife came over and asked us to look at her husbands rifle.
OK, nice guys that we are we all trot over and find that he has a nice moisin in 7.62x54r. He tells me that the cases look funny. I picked one up and the headstamp says 308 win. He told me thats the ammo he was given by the store.
I told him that he's firing the wrong ammo in his rifle. He tells me thats its 7.62 and that his rifle is 7.62. This goes round and round until I look at the ground and find a steel cased 7.62x54r case. I gave it to him and said this is the caliber ammo he should be firing out of the moisin. Since there was a local gun show that weekend I mentioned that maybe he should take a quick run over there and get the right ammo. 45 minutes he's back with a spam can of 7.62x54r and after he showed it to us was a happy shooter. Frank46,that sounds familiar.
.243 in .308 chamber is not going to blow your gun up,you just can´t hit anything with it.Few years back,at our local range, fellow was zeroing his rifle, but couldn´t even hit his target. He was complaining that there was something wrong with his rifle or scope. His bullets were hitting all over backstop.I was shooting on the next bench,so I take a look at his ammo.Ammo box is clearly labeled .243,but the spend cases on the bench are looking like .308.He had just picked a box of ammo from gunstore, without looking what caliber it was.Other fellow used 7mm Remmag ammo in his 7mm Wbymag without realizing it.He was complaining that ammo was hard to chamber, but never noticed that fired cases were different than unfired ammo, before I pointed it out to him.As Starmetal said, they can´t be made idiot proof, but it helps,if you read the caliber markings in gun,and match it with ammo markings.
