I wished to pick everyone's brain to see if there is a good BOOLIT for the .270 rifle for Hog and Deer say out to 150 to 200 yards?

Thank You everyone in advance. :)

Funny you asked as I was going to start a thread on the 270. I haven't had one for 40 years. My Nephew just spent his College graduation money on a 270 Savage Package gun and had no money left over for ammo. So Uncle George promised him he'd work up some loads for it including a deer load and target. Well after close to 600rds of test rds down range I came up with two or three that'll do him for deer and prairie dogs. Criteria was to keep velocity up to at least 1900.

For some reason I had 2 270 moulds on hand when I started this project and a friend loaned me 2 others. Then I picked up two more later that were rusty on the outside, but serviceable on the inside. So that brought up the total to 6. On a lark I tried something that worked before for me. I tried sizing down a couple of 7mm boolits and as it turned out, they proved to be the most accurate of the 8 I ended up trying. My Ideal 285346HP 7mm boolit over 35gr of AA3100 using a foam wad to keep the powder in place came up with 2025fps. That same boolit with 33gr of AA4350 was just shy of 2000fps and was shot 1.5" verses 2.5 for the AA3100. The 127gr 7mm Lee shot well also with almost any powder charge I tried. It's a bit light even using wheel weight alloy.

Doing all this testing another supposed problem that everbody says won't work came up. Seating to boolit below the neck. Heck the Lee was well below and the 285346 was almost past the shoulder and still outshot the others, so I say who gives a shi* what the big boys say, get in there and try it yourself.

The One I expected to be his go to boolit for deer, the 280412 turned out to be the worst of the bunch. The Herters 27138 clone of that same mould will run rings around it for some reason. Probably because I'm limited to only a 278 sizing die for testing. I have a Hensley & Gibbs #108 138gr that shot extremely well, but even after using the wrong nose punch to flatten it out I'd hesitate to use it on deer. I have an old unmarked 138gr. brass mould the shoots well, but there again it's very sharp spire point.

My lightest 280468 Lovern at 117gr should take deer with the 30gr of 3031 going at 2233fps. The Squibb type 280473' never did any load getting under what I consider angle of deer(3.5"). I got 4.5" using 13gr of Green Dot, 20gr of 5744, & 25gr of Varget. 16gr of 4227 worked well with most boolits as did 16 gr. of IMR 2400. One old powder on hand that has about the same burn rate as Varget, H-375 was tried with a wad and did extremely well.

I set up the Chrony for some loads then it would rain and it's too much trouble to drag it out there for only 10 or 15 rds., so I use the recoil to determine if it's got enough snort to punch a hole in Bambi....Geo.

Deer should be no problem, but for hogs you may want a heavier boolit, like the Lyman 280642. Good luck finding one, as I have been searching for 3 years for one. I missed one on Ebay, and it went for $75.

Another boolit that may perform well is the Saeco 140 grain.

I've got 5 Lyman, 2 RCBS, 2 Lee and 1 Saeco in .277. This was going to be my summer project, until I couldn't get large rifle primers any more.

Check the search for cast .270 on here, there are quite a few posts out there.

Any reasonable load in a .270 with cast ought to zip right through a deer or hog. Penetration won't be a problem with that small frontal area, But also with that small bore and cast ,placement of the shot is everything. I've never shot any animals with a .270 with cast, but I've shot a number with .30 calibers, and have never had a boolit stay in an animal, even with the .30/30. Small bores kill things just as dead as big bores, there is just less room for placement error:-D:drinks:
