Guys,

I was given a bunch of 130 gr spire point gas checked hard cast boolits sized to 0.312" and a a batch of 170 gr round nose gas checked hard cast boolits sized at 0.310"

Any thoughts on what these might be used for?

Might be worth knowing before I melt them for their alloy content.

Thanks,

130 spire pts may be for a 7.62x39

the 170gr's for a 30-06, 30-30, or 308

Perhaps another way to ask the question is:

What is usual practice for sizing boolits for .308 caliber rifles?

Size to 309 or larger, depends on bore size, determined by sluging the bore.

And as Blammer stated, most 30 cal guns (30-06, .308, etc) groove at .308-.309 and will eat .310 diameter lead. 7.62x39 typically have .311 grooves. Since there are so many surplus guns with various wear, .312 would work in most.

The .310 will prolly work in most any .30 cal. Some might even swallow the .311. If the will load in the chamber without forcing them in they should be ok to shoot. If there is nothing wrong with them I personally would load some and see how they shoot. Shame to wast the gas checks and it is a pain to salvage them out of a pot.
