For those of you interested in the Gibbs rifles and I know KSCO is, this might be of some interest to you...especially if you TRIED to go to Gibbs site and it wouldn't come up.

I was told that Gibbs was a project of Val's boy and that the company is now defunct. I do know that the Gibbs 45-70's were made by Rossi in Brazil and that their biggest problem was with the magazines. As far as i know Glen Zanders has the last of the available Gibbs rifles.

KSCO,

Well as you read they are going to be importers for Mauser. Their website is already Kaput.

I was looking through the VPC list of companies and had a funny thought...I wonder if they got copyright permission to use those catalog graphics from the various firearms makers they are trying to put out of business. :)

This NEW Gibbs Rifle co. is a johnnie come lately.
I have a photo copy of the section of the book
"Handbook for Shooters and reloaders." by P.O. Ackley.
In this article Mr. Ackley tests The Gibbs cartridges and they are wicked.
What the Gibbs Rifle Co. did was use the 30-06 case and blow it out straight.
Useing a short neck , the case vol. was increased.
The size of the cart. range from 240 Gibbs, 25 Gibbs, 6.5 Gibbs,270 Gibbs,
7mm Gibbs, 30 Gibbs, 8mm Gibbs & .338 Gibbs.
If this does not seem possible and you have access to GUNS & AMMO
OCT. 1959 . Read it. The article was written by Robert Hutton, Technical Editor.

P.S. The reason I say that my copy of this article is a photo copy
is because the page is black with white letters.

270 Win. 24' barrel with 57 grs. of 4831 2644fps.

270 Ackley Mag. 26' bar. " 65 grs. " 4831 2833 fps

270 Weatherby mag. 25' bar. 68 grs. 4831 2855fps

270 Gibbs 24' bar. 62.5 grs. 4831 2915fps.

This is the test that GUNS & AMMO did.

I was privlidged ??? to shoot a 505 Gibbs once, and that was enough. If I remember correctly it was ike 25% more energy than a 458. My shoulder hurts just thinking about it!

Libbyman; the Gibbs you speak of was Rocky Gibbs, of Viola Idaho. He developed a line of Gibbs cartridges in the 1950's, on the 06 case. The info I have shows an 11.1% increase in case capacity over the stabndard 270. This is data published by Don O'Conner
270 Gibbs-22" bbl
150 Nosler
4831(that would be H)
62.6-2850
63.6-2900
64.6-2950
65.7-3000
66.8-3050

YES, this what I am talking about. You are the first person that I have talked to that had ever heard of Gibbs Rifles of this type.

Ah,yes, Rocky Gibbs: one of the great CHARACTERSs from the world of wildcatters.. But credit for the 505 Gibbs goes WAY back before Rocky... Closest "new" thing we have to Rocky's "ideas" is F.Zeglin's "Hawk" line of w'cats. But PI Lawyers have probably got the claims toned down a bit closer to reality..!! Onceabull

Concerning the Gibbs cartridges.I have a 30 Gibbs that I bought from a freind of mine several years ago that he had built back in the 40's.26" #7 contour on a 98 action.I never really considered working up a cast load for this one as it as it was of only moderate interest.Although the load that that I do use is 63G. ?IMR4350 W/Sierra #2145 165G.@M.V.3080.No excessive pressure signs. In my 300 H+H W/ same bullet + 68.G IMR4350 for same M.V.I open the neck W/ a tapered 35 cal. expanding button, then resize neck to 30 cal.,seat, minor fireform charge + voila.I use 30-06 cases as I have an overabundance of them (a prerequisite for wildcating + gen. cart. conv.).Although a friend of mine claims he gets better performance using 280 brass.P.O. Ackley does mention them in his books, but for more information Wolfe Publishing has a good book on Gibbs cart. I.S.B.N. # 0-935632-99-9.Copyright 1991,but maybe still in print. As an aside;the older gent that I bought the rifle from passed several years ago but before the family put him away W/Alzheimers.Since he was an bachelor his brother decided to clean out + sell his little house outside of town. They hired local high school boys, got a large dumpster. After the clean up had already started, one of the family members remembered me + called to say I could come take anything I wanted as it was all going to the dump.Well,I managed to fill the back of my pickup with components that he accumulated over several decades so I really can't complain;however about 2 weeks later one of the same affore mentioned high school boys came by my shop,(probably for a free box of ammo as that happens quite frequently) + he noticed some of my moulding blocks W/ handles. When he asked me what they were + I told him,he mentioned that when cleaning out old Bill's house they found scores of those old things + just threw them in the dumpster.Since Bill had'nt bought anything new in quite some time + this happened several years ago,it does'nt bear thinking about what was lost.Don't know why I had to share that part;misery loves company I suppose. Never mistake motion for action E.H.
