I have a 45-70 mould at 459di.
I want to make that bullet 435di.
From what I've been told on this fourm, it's to much to size down.

Has anyone tried to shave the surface of the mould to get it to the correct size. Would end up with an oval bullet, but it maybe easier to resize because of less lead to move.

Just trying to think out of the box.

A couple of sizers, use dish soap for lube. Rinse when done.
You are going down a big jump, so go in steps.
I would use Lee Push Thru Sizers.

Shaving the mold block would be the opposite of beagling. The problem I see here besides an oval bullet is that you would lose all the air bleeds.

Sizing down from .459 to .435 would probably wipe all the lube and crimping grooves. I wouldn't do it.

If you fill the lube grooves before taking it down that will help support them to and extent. If you lose the lube grooves, you can reform them with a canulure tool.

I agree the Lee sizers are the way to go. I'd figure .005-008 per pass is about max so you'll be opening some undersized dies.

Why not get a new mold the right size rather than ruin a good one, and probably not
get a useful boolit anyway?

I just ran some Ranch Dogs that I think are .460 down to .452 last night with a Lee push thru and a Rock Chucker press.
I lubed them well with alox before sizing, adjusted the die up so the bullet could start in with the handle farther down (thus more leverage), and it was still a chore.
Even at .008 there's not much lube groove left.
If you took it down .008 at a time there's $45.00-$60.00 in Lee sizing dies towards a new mold.

I would get a mould that I want if anyone made one.
Closes I found is a Seaco #433.
430di, 300gr, round nose. Problem is it's a gas check bullet.
I'm looking for a flat base. Also want it 435di. But that's not a problem.
I could have Lee make one, but we all know what the problem with that is.

Give Dan @ mountainmolds a try. Use his boolit design software to design your own boolit.

You can have the Saeco mold that is a GC modified to a FB. You will only lose that amount of weight and not destroy the bullet.

+1 - Easy to take out the GC step.

I was thinking of Mtn Molds when I asked why not get the mold you want.

You can also get LBT to cut one to your specs.

I'm guessing the weight you want is around 400-500grs. You could also consider getting a mould for the 404 Jeffrey or 444 Marlin and paperpatch them to increase the size a few to many thousandths. Get all of the side benefits of paperpatched, too (softer alloy - to expand - and ultra-clean bore from the paper).
