Went out to try some bullets that I cast with a new mold that the wife brought home for me. {Yep, got a pretty good one} It's an RCBS 45-405-FN. Cast with wheelweights and air cooled. Loaded them in WW brass, CCI 200 primers with 48 grains of Reloder 7. Tried some other charges but they all shot about the same, with 48.0 grains being the heaviest I loaded so far. Shooting was done at 50 yards as I did not know what to expect. They clocked 1850 fps and packed quite a whallop out of the 1895G. Looks like a keeper.

It is a good feeling to come back from the range with a target like that. Makes up for the days when we don't.

Who says Lever Actions don't group good?

Excellent group - you can take anything in North America with that load!

.................1850 fps from a M95 Marlin. I'll bet it was a joyfull experience! You have 50 yards nailed, now it's time to try it at 100. For me at 53 and having worn glasses since the 6th grade 100 yards is a lot of work to try and do justtice to the load and the gun. That is, if it isn't scoped. If it is, then no alibi's at 100 :-)

Let's see that one too!

OK, you got a good one! No doubt. Now tell her that you need the Lyman 330 gr Gould Hollowpoint mold, it's current production so it's no problem finding. That is the deerslayer bullet for the 45-70. Less felt recoil, too!

Yup, was grateful for the leadsled with those loads. I have a scope on it just for working up loads. As soon as I decide on a load I will go back to the XS sights. Hopefully I will be able to get out this weekend and try some at 100 yards.

That's the same bullet and velocity I use in my 1886 Brownchester carbine. Then I told the fellows here about that load and they said "Joe, you're crazy to beat your shoulder to death with that velocity" so I tuned it back some...for after all they were right. Now with peeop sights and off the bench my rifle will shoot silver dollars at 100 yards. I figure that's plenty good enough...especially for a beating at the bench.

Got back to the range today with the same load. You asked for it, here it is. 100 yard 5 shot group measuring 1.6" {the five big holes to the left of the bullet}. Believe I will stick with this load. Now, time to go back to the XS sights and see how much these groups open up.:-D

Ted, mighty nice shootin!!!!!!!!. Thats one good thing about the 45-70, your shoulder will let you know when its time to quit. I used to shoot rem 300gr J bullets at 2000fps out of my ruger #1. Now its down to about 1850fps. Not worth the bellowing and roaring. Frank
