I'm visiting my family for the week and my dad casts buckshot and jigs -- He uses the buckshot in the lures he makes by hand, as for the jigs, well fishes with them!

Anyway we were casting buckshot and I thought I'd snap a picture or two and show you guys his setup, it's pretty nice and easy to work with.

The buck mold is from american sharpshooters I believe.. The ladle, I'll have to ask him but I'll post it up here.

The ladle is nice, it has a "tube" built into the side that reaches to the bottom so when you scoop up the lead the crap stays on top and the tube pours out nice clean lead.

Hiaboo,

Your Dad's ladle is made by Rowell. It's awkward to cast bullets with because the melt runs all over the mould. I have one that I use to make chamber casts with.

He'd save a bunch of money on propane if he got an electric melter. Lee makes a 20# pot that works great. Playing a hot flame directly on the lead can cause lead to vaporize. Normal casting temps when using electric pots doesn't cause lead vapors.

Snuffy -- What I did not show is the excellent ventiliation system down there. It acutally has enough power to suck the air though the vents that's in the basement for the heating.. I'll get a picture up. He gets the gas for free from the dump so no worries there... He asked me what is better, the ladle or the electric pot, I use a production IV so I said that I liked the pot better.

Shiloh, about a pound/half..

A score today as well -- Went to the flea market and got a GOSS plumber's furnace for $10, plus two cast iron ladles, not bad at all considering it goes for $140 new without the ladles or anything of the like.
