There was some ( a minority) interest in this design by 4.5 2.1 on another thread, as an alternative to theSWC design for the revolvers, mostly by rifle shooters concerned about SWC feeding issues. This is not the same as the lighter.444 screamer, or heavier LFN designs. I'd like it for the 44 Automag , (overall length is limited by magazine). Hope I posted this correctly , to see if enough rifle shooters could carry a Mihec HP design. For any who don't know, that design works very well.

I believe I read in another thread that Miha offered to make his hollow point molds in 3 cavity for a small increase in cost. That would be sweet!

Looks interesting. I'd like to learn the as-cast diameter to see whether this would fill up a Marlin micro-groove barrel. Still, this has real potential for the 44 Special. Awwww, what the heck, I'm in. This design would be really handy in GC, but I would still take it in plain base.

07-28-2009, 07:19 AM
Looks like a winner in a plain-base for my 44Spec revolver, although just a bit more weight would be good. I normally use a 245swc boolit.
I like the profile to improve feeding in my Marlin 44mag rifle, but again, a bit more weight and a GC would be a good idea here.
Let's keep pushing consideration on this one-- It has promise!

Ok guys, where are all the compact 44 special shooters? This is the ideal boolit for revolvers like the S&W 696, Charter Bulldog, etc. This is a much better Hollow point platform than a SWC.

Lots of folks will disagree with that statement.

OK, exactly why is swc HP better? Never understood that myself. To me a SWC is for cutting nice holes in paper.

07-29-2009, 11:07 AM
I'd go for one if it were adopted as or was optional with a gas check base. Possibly we could do the same as the 41 group buy and make it available in either flat or gas check base.
Highland Drifter
07-29-2009, 11:23 AM
Lots of folks will disagree with that statement.
It depends on what you want your hollow point to do. A SWC has 1 advantage... it will cut a nice clean hole in paper targets. It has the disadvantage of shearing the expanded nose at the front band. My Lyman 358156 H.P. bullets expand very nicely, but leave a lead donut behind when the nose blows off. A RNFP H.P. will have a better chance of supporting and holding onto the expanding nose for better weight retention. The RNFP H.P. will also feed smoother (faster) in a revolver than a SWC. Don't get me wrong I'm a SWC fan and shoot thoudands of them. Now to make a few enemies... a SWC is a great nostalgic boolit, but there is better out there so get over it.
Brian
only1asterisk
07-29-2009, 12:31 PM
Actually, the SWC's primary advantage is that, all else being equal, the SWC will expand at a lower velocity. While the RNFP will hold on to it's mushroom to a higher velocity, the SWC does fine in the .38 or.44 Special velocity range.
As for RNFP being easier to load, that's true. But with a little practice it really isn't that much of an advantage.
I'm a RNFP guy, but the SWC works great for some applications.
As for the "SWC's for paper only" nonsense, all that really matters in hunting is the velocity, meplat, sectional density and stability (in flight and while penetrating). So long as SWC bullet does these things, it hunts as well as any other bullet.

I believe that MiHec has made the GC (or not) an option; can anyone confirm that? Also, for any rifle shooters involved in SASS matches( I'm not), could the collapse or expansion of a HP PB make bounce back from metal plates less likely? I intend to try some of these and the SWC in HP configuration to reduce that risk; just asking.

only1asterisk,
I think we're probably on the same page as far as RNFP vs SWC. I just like to rattle a cage once in a while, hope no offence was taken. I just prefer my SWC's to be cast solid instead of H.P. The 40 cal Glock and JHP's carried in the urban jungle are left at home when I'm out camping or backpacking in the wilderness. I prefer to carry a 44 or 45 revolver loaded with cast solids with large meplats weather SWC or RNFP. Out in the wild I would rather have complete penetration and make the target bleed out of both holes.

No offense offered or taken, we're about on the same page. The SWCHP is great for walking around busting jackrabbits and no slouch should you be required to shoot larger varmints. Cast solid the same boolit might be enough for deer (454423 comes to mind).

Bump. This one is too good to let go, we only need a couple more people interested. This boolit would be useful in most any 44 handgun or rifle. My plans for it would be 44 Special loads for my S&W 696 and maybe light 44 Mag loads for S&W and Ruger 44 Mag revolvers. I would think this one would work well in 44-40 rifles/revolvers.

I went for 3 of these to get this thread started, and another SWC on the thread I separated this one from. It would be hard to justify 4 of these, although I plan one as a gift. My brother is a SASS 44-4o shooter, and I wanted to try the GC version in a 44 Automag. I agree that it certainly seems versatile, and its light weight might stretch somone's lead supply enough to kick in for one. Sounds like I'm grasping here, and I am, but this would really round out a 44 mold collection. I'm also in for the both of Miha's H&G 503 Keith and HP versions. Sorry for the random post that doesn't add another order, when we just need 2, but here's hoping that someone connects...

Miha (MP Molds) is the Honcho for this project when he gets around to taking actual orders for it. Right now he is waiting to get machine time to complete projects ahead of this one. Right now it's on standby like several others.

I just started the thread to separate those wanting a RNHP from those wanting a SWCHP; couldn't be a Honcho, ever, (even if Miha didn't serve as his own); and have nothing but admiration those with the patience, tenacity and PR skills to dedicate themselves to such a task.

Groo,
A 44 boolit that cast 218 gr as a solid should be short enough to fit short cylinder revolvers. Maybe 45 2.1 can provide some basic dimensions along with the picture???

HollowPoint, I have been wanting this one from the start. When it gets here I feel this will be "the" boolit for my S&W 696. Miha of MP molds is a tool maker/machinist that lives and works half way around the world. He is a one man operation that got into mold making as a side business. He has purchased his own CNC mill and is in the process of setting up his own shop. MP molds is a start up business and in time will be able to increase production and turn out molds on the "list" at a faster rate. His brass cramer H.P. molds are top quality and well worth the wait. I don't think Miha can answer when this mold will be produced, but I'm sure he is trying the best he can to get these done for us. When you think about what Miha has produced for members here since that first single cavity 45 cal H.P. mold last spring, I think as a one man operation he has done very well.
Partsman, if you want in on this buy or others post your interest here or on those threads what you want. If you want in on this one choose a Plain Base or Gas Check. Also this one will probably be run as 2 diameters .432" and .434" so choose diameter as well. You can also copy and paste the list in a reply and add your name and choices to the end. When Miha (MP Molds) gets ready to make this mold he will take orders.

I know he's good at what he does. I have one of his 44/444 brass molds that I bought as part of a previous group buy.
I guess I was just hoping against hope that I might be able to get this one before Christmas. I see that it's not likely to happen.
At any rate, I still plan on being one of the buyers of this mold when it finally does happen.
I think that right now I'm just posting to keep this thread alive and nothing more. From the list of interested parties at this point, there may very well be close to 35 or 40 potential buyers when this mold works its way to the top of the list.

This mold seems to be taking a little longer to come to fruition than I expected so, please consider this my official "Take Me Off The List" post.
I think I've found a way to modify an existing bullet mold that will give me a very similar cast bullet.
It seems like the really good bullet mold makers are always really busy. I'd say MiHec falls into this category.

I want to encourage this GB, but I'm not on it. This design looks exactly like my SAECO #445 that Erik put a Cramer style mod on. It casts 431 212 gr PB HP and is my favorite boolit! I've run it from 750-1390 fps out of my 4" 629. My most accurate and old hands friendly load is about 17.8 of 2400. That load gives me about 1070 fps.

Can anyone help me out with this? I would like to know what is the difference between a GC boolit and a PB boolit in the shape of the mould. I assume the GC has a slight groove at the base for the GC to crimp into? Can I shoot a GC boolit without seating a gas check or will I encourage gas cutting by doing this. I tried to find a picture of both types of boolit but am having no luck yet. Thanks!

Think about a gas check style design without the gas check as being a heeled boolit. A heeled boolit is what you see in most rim fire cartridges like a 22 long rifle.
There are other centerfire cartridges that use heeled boolits like the 41 Colt or the 310 Martini. If it works well in those it will work as well in any, just find the right load.

Size of the mold is what the boolets drop at based on wheel weights.

Brian
Shearing the nose off is both good and bad, entirely dependent on exactly what you're using the bullet for. You'll get a larger initial wound cavity, combined with deeper penetration if the nose section shears off, compared to a bullet that stays together after expansion. Increased frontal area damages more tissue, but it also slows the bullet down faster.
In my opinion, you should get both and use each type appropriately.
PoorGuy

I know that Miha makes his pins such that you can invert for a flat nose, but if a dedicated set of flat nose pins is an option, I would spring for a set. Pins sticking out of the bottom makes preheating the mould more difficult.
Also, if a set of small diameter pins was an option, I'd be in for a GC versions in addition to the PB.

What are advantages/disadvantages of round pin vs penta pin?
That depends entirely on what you expect the HP to do........... If you want a classic expanded (picture perfect) HP, the five point pin is what you want. You will have to use a softer tough ductile alloy to get it. With that same alloy you can use a deeper round HP and get energy dumping explosive effects also (The neighbor shot a oppossum a few nights ago with one of my 9mm HP boolits. You would have thought the poor thing got hit with a 22 centerfire varmint bullet. It had a very torn up hole lengthwise thru it that you wouldn't believe.) That HP was designed to blow the nose off and dump energy and it does that very well, the base drives thru and exits in most cases so far.

This has taken so long that I actually had myself taken off the list because it didn't seem like it would ever come to fruition.
Now that it looks like it's finally going to happen, I'd like to be put back on the list please.
It's seems peculiar but, I seem to recall in one of my previous reply's regarding the list of interested members in this 44 caliber group buy, I stated something to the effect that I thought that the list could grow to possibly 40 or-so long. Rather prophetic, in a cheezy sort of way.
And now that I've decided to count myself back on the list, it turns out that I may be number 44 on this list.
I think I'll go buy myself a lottery ticket. Wish me luck.
I'd like a Gas Checked version in the .434 size.
Many thanks to the Honcho for this buy. You are one patient man.

Regretfully, I wish to be removed from the list (#36)
I'm going with the SWC HP for a lightweight, and will join

Kirb, GLL,
I don't have any way of knowing if an order went through on Miha's web sight. I PM'ed Miha and asked if he can post a list of those that have ordered. This one has been in the works for a long time. I hope the saying "good things come to those that wait" holds up here. Judging from Miha's past work, there's no reason this mold shouldn't be a winner.

Then I was out because I went for the heavier .44-640.
Now I’m back in, because that .44-640 is so very nice,
I can’t pass up the lighter one, I want it too!
I think MP moulds, as good as they are, keep getting better.
