View Full Version : Gas Checks vs no Gas checks?

I've been using light loads of 10grs unique or 16grs 2400 with my 314299 bullet with gas checks in my 303 Enfields.
I have'nt measured the velocity but think w/ both charges must be under 1500fps.
Does anyone know what the velocity would be with those charges and has anyone fired these loads or similar ones without gas checks ?
And if so what bullet hardness was necessary to prevent leading? Ray

First, stop thinking hardness and start thinking size. You need a boolit that fits your gun to get any good shooting with a GC and it's even more important w/o a GC. If yu're getting good grouping with the GC then you can try it w/o. Sometimes a slightly fatter boolit will shoot a little better than a smaller diameter boolit w/o the check, sometimes a slightly softer or ahrder alloy will make it work. There are lots of posts here on shooting w/o a GC, read through them and get a feel for what seems to help the other guys.

IMO it all depends on the gun, some just won;t handle the boolit w/o a GC.

+1 what bret4207 said. He is a smart fella. Know your gun.

16gr 2400 will put you closer to 1600fps I am confident.

Maybe it's just me but I have had little success shoot GC bullets without GC's even at low velocities.
