View Full Version : .41 Mag Porn:Legacy and Classic Boolits

A few weeks ago I checked my boolit supply. Plenty of .38s, ,44s and ,45s but low on .41s. Dug out some classic molds I've picked up over the years, most of which I had never used.

I've spent a couple hours almost every night for the last week or so working with one mold a session. Thought you .41 Mag lovers might enjoy seeing results.

All the boolits were made in molds that are no longer in production or in one case are from a group buy. All weights are those listed by manufacturer; my limited sampling show that mine are three to six grains heavier in each case. Alloy was straight WWs.

1. Lyman 410459 - 220 grs
2. H & G 258.410 - 220 grs
3. Lyman 41032 - 212 grs
4. Lyman 41026 - 199 grs
5. Lyman 41028 - 212 grs
6. Lyman 410426 - 240 grs
7. Lee 410-240SWC - 240 grs
8. Lee 410640 - 237 grs (Group Buy)

Thanks, Prof. Nice show.

You're missing a Saeco Keith and the Lyman 410610 gc. I can send you a Saeco to put in your photo, but the only 410610 I've had I sold to someone on this list a couple of years ago. I got it in a trade and don't shoot gc boolits in the .41, so I sold it.

Regards,

Stew

That Lee 240 grain SWC really bucks and snorts when you touch off a case of H-110 behind it ! For my money, this is the bullet that makes the 41 mag fully the equal of the 44 mag.

Yeah, up until last year Lyman listed the 410610. I don't have one cause I don't like GCs either so I never bought one. I've got a Saeco 220 SWCBB and a Lee 190 SWC but those are still in current production so I didn't include them in shot.

That GB boolit sure is sexy!!! Makes me want to get a .41 now!

I think the GB bullet would be a good one to hollowpoint, but I don't want to mess with a 6 cav mold to do it. Might try drilling some of them just to see what happens.

perfessor, the H & G #258 is out of production but I think Ballisti-cast is still making them with a different number. Like 858 or something along that line. That boolit was one of my favorites for the 41 I also had an other or 2 from H & G one of them was the crayon tip boolit I would have to go look at an old H & G catalog for the number. Sadley all of my 41 moulds went with the ex in a divorce settlement. Then I got rid of the revolter too.....Damn I miss the moulds and the revolter....Wes

The 41, what a nice round. It's a SHAME that it has gotten the status of a red headed step child. I bought my first Ruger SA 41 mag about 71 and my friends asked what's that. I then went on to shoot IHMSA with it and buy the S&W 57,58 guns.

That's quite a row of hard to come by's....

I have the Saeco 410 mould, it looks a lot like the GB mould you have pictured. I like the RNF style for revolvers and have them for my 45's and 44's also.

Great post/thread showing what isn't made now.
Pretty handy for those of us who don't have/don't remember them or have never seen them all lined up like that.

Here is another "dead" .41 mould design- The Ohaus 410-210K:

Notice how small that meplat is. Here is another picture with a 38/357 SWC bullet (Saeco 382) placed nose-to-nose to show how the meplats compare:

Don't ask me how it shoots because I don't know yet. I got it recently and haven't had a chance to try it. Average weight from WWs was 223 grains.

That's the one. I threw a bid at it, and surprise- I got it.

Yes, it does look like they combined a .38 nose with .41 bands. I even momentarily wondered if they made those from salvaged .38/357 moulds by opening up the bands, but I'd think it is longer than such a bullet would be.

Is it my imagination or is the front band a smaller diameter than the rest of the bullet? Any measurements you might care to share?

BarryinIN

On the first bullet I picked up:

That front band is only .392 diameter
It's a thin thing too, at only .050 long. Just enough there to say it has one.

Bottom two bands are both .412-.413 diameter
Top one is .123 long; bottom is .192 long

Crimp groove to meplat: .295

The only .41 Mag I have now is a Marlin. Whether it will do anything in it, I'll have to see.
I wish those bottom bands were just a little bigger too (the bore slugged at .4115-.412), but it might work.

As you might guess, I don't have the most confidence in this bullet in that rifle. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm glad I have another mould standing by (Lee 410-240SWC). I'll probably have another by the time I get around to doing much with that rifle again anyway.

To be honest, when I saw it for sale- I thought it would be closer to the RCBS 41-210SWC that I hear so many people talking about being good.

Perfesser,

I do have a Lyman 410610 mold ... want a couple of slugs for your collection?

Let me know. If so, I make them the next time I cast.

AZ-Stew:
If you want to send me one or two of your SAECO .41 bullets I would be glad to have them for collection.

mstarling:
If you want to send me a couple of 410610s I would be glad to have them also.

BarryinIN:
I would be glad to have a couple of your OHAUS slugs too if you would want to send them.

Got wife a digital camera for birthday a while back and it takes good, sharp close-ups. She doesn't mind me using it as long as I buy all the film! (lol)

Plan to take individual photographs of all bullets I have molds for plus any "donations" from others. Will add photographs to database of mold inventory so that I can identify bullets by sight as well as by number/designation. I have started putting bullets in plastic boxes with dividers, 18 compartments per box. I label lid to match compartments and plan to add photographs to help organize things.

Will pm you guys with my address.

Those are some really nice looking boolits, I found out casting over 200 grains really uses a good bit more lead and lube, oh well.

Hope you enjoy vacation. I live in Evansville, where do you live in IN?

Hendricks county. About halfway between Plainfield and Greencastle.

We need to take another weekend trip to Evansville. The kids like the zoo, my wife likes the Indian mounds, and I like going to see LST 325.

We are in GA at the in-laws now (pray for me), and will be going on Disney World (pray for me).

I'm going to have a hernia operation tomorrow. Depending on your in-laws I may have drawn the better duty...
