View Full Version : I Love living in GA!

I love the fact that I was able to move to Georgia.

After living in NY for the last 4 years and their restrictive handgun laws, it is like Nirvana coming down to GA.

I stopped into my local gunshop and was able to look at 8 large displays of new and used pistols. I think I scared the owner when I started drooling on the glass...

45 minutes later I picked out a Taurus 99AF model to come home with me. Its a copy of the Beretta 92 with an adjustable rear sight. Its solid black with rubber grip panels. It had a twin that was two-toned but I'm not into flashy pistols.

Now I have to pick up some 9mm Luger dies and pair them up with the 115gr Lyman mold that I use with my 9mm Largo carbine.

And now I need to find time to take her shooting once my dies and come in!

I don't know how many of you were buying guns before 1968, but there was a gun dealer where I use to live who had a unique way that he "tricked" me in to buying a gun.

If I spent too much time looking over a gun he would say "hey, just take it home and try it out for a week or so." Now, he would not do this with everyone only us suckers. who would show up a week or so later with the money.

You did not want to screw ol' Darrell or try to beat him out of anything. He sold gun part time after his regular job as a deputy sheriff.

I bought my first gun from Darrell when I was 15 yrs old, but I had to have a note from my mom and not my dad. His thinking was that your mom was less likely to consent than dad would be.

I miss the good old days!

Pimp Daddy Brucie with the 2-tone 9mm Taurus. Man, you missed your calling! Welcome to a part of America that still values individual rights. I grew up in NY, and did not return there to live. I knew there was things going on that I didn't like, and I made my way, thankfully, elsewhere. I still do not understand how we Americans can be SO DIFFERENT. btw, my last residence in NY was '68. I grew up on Long Island and miss the ocean and LI Sound and upstate for all the things it it WAS.

yeah, right...the pimp pistol with the gold trigger and pearl grips stayed in the display case. I bought the blued one :)

And there are days when I miss the Maine Coast before it went Socialist in the 90s.

hey bruce, im glad im in ga. as well. its a much calmer place than where i used to live, but i never expected i would have a hard time finding a good place to shoot. do you have a destroyer carbine? i have one in 9mm largo, if you want to compare notes give me a p.m.---phil

Yep, I've got a Destroyer Carbine I picked up a few years back. I had to fabricate a new extractor for it but its a great rabbit roller with either 130FMJ or 115gr Cast Lead.

Hi Bruce!

I'm glad that you escaped the insanity of the NorthEast. Been there, done that!
Maine is beautiful, but the people have simply gone politically nuts.
I'm forced to go back once in a while because of the parents and the kids, but can only take it for so long.
The mountains of NC are my favorite place, but the local county here in WA state is thankfully populated with people that have Appalacian attitudes and common sense.
You couldn't pay me to live back East, or down in California.
I feel sorry for those of us everywhere that get stuck living under the rules that clueless idiots from the city force on the rest of us. There has to be some solution...

Bruce,

Congrats on the move and I'm glad you're a law-abiding citizen of Kennesaw. By the way, when you move into that town, how much time do they give you to comply with their law requiring each household to own a gun?

I was born in PA, grew up in Indiana, and the Navy moved me around, first to Virginia, then Commiefornia. When we escaped from there as political refugees (25 years ago next Wednesday!!) and came to Arizona, we would get occasional visits from my parents, who had moved from Indiana back to PA in the late 60s. We would take them to the Smitty's stores (now owned by Kroger/Fry's) which were, at the time, very much like a modern version of a western General Store. They carried everything. Food, clothes, auto supplies, a lot of etcetras and GUNS! When entering the store there was a big sign requesting that all guns be checked at the store manager's office upon entering. That really freaked out my parents. They kept asking us, "When are you going to come back to America?" I never could convince them that this IS America, and a better example of it than PA. I was born to live here. It just took me 34 years to figure it out. I'm glad, Bruce, that you've found your vision of freedom.

Regards,

Stew

I also grew up in New York (western N.Y. that is), graduated from High School in the late 50's, enlisted in the Marine Corps, then in the Air Force, traveled the world and never looked back. It was a different western New York then from now.
Used to wander the fields with a 22 for woodchucks, and in the fall in the woods for squirrl and rabbit. Everybody I knew who was worth knowing hunted, and or fished etc. It is different now. Hunting Lisc tags on your back so the game warden can spot you from a distance with binocs. Not uncommon in the east. Hunting is down in numbers of hunters now due to the hassels. The politicians are almost all anti gun, tree hugging, PETA supporting yo-yo's etc. I feel sorry for the few hunters that I still know back there who are restricted by all of the garbage associated with gun ownership and hunting. I married a Georgian, and am back in Ga. a couple of times a year. Love the state, love the people, just can't take the heat. Like a lot of others who value their rights and freedoms, you could not bribe me with enough to ever make me more back to the north east.
On top of all of the rest associated with gun ownership, is the fact that the North East is taxed to death. However with Obama in office, looks like we will all be taxed to death to pay for the deadbeats and the illeagles. Now ya learn to love grits (Ga. Snow), and blow gnats, and learn that yall is one word and you ought to fit right in! Good Luck!

Dang, I’m glad that I live in the south. All I’ve ever had to do was walk in a gun store and out 15 minutes later with my new toy. Or a face to face buy of anything that I wanted to but minus black guns on a restricted list. I even had an FFL once but let it drop when the price of the license went through the roof.

I have a range right here on my back 40, behind the pond and the corrals.I could never even dream of that in ca. ,because of the price and 10 billion beuracrats that would stand in my way of what I want and what they think I should do with my property. Not to mention the lead......the evil lead...

Lived on long island for about the first 50 years. Moved to louisiana and don't regret it. none of the bs about getting a purchase permit then going to show it to make sure that is what will go on your license. Walk in pay the man, telephone call and out the door. course my brother still is up there. I feel sorry for those that live in new york. Dinkens took all the fun when he banned the semi's and it was downhill after that. Frank

I've yet to even break out my casting gear! I haven't hit Clybel WMA yet. Does it have a decent place to shoot rifles? All I've seen so far have been pistol ranges attached to gun shops with outrageous prices to shoot at.

RugerFan,

Thanks for the link to the WMAs. Clybel is 75 miles from my current residence in Kennesaw (I've temp living with my B-in Law until the house sells in NY). Johns Mountain is only 63 and straight up I75. I may hit that next weekend and get back into shooting again. I've got that new Taurus to try out :) And I need also restart my 6.5 JAP project with the Lyman 140gr.

I'm an Army retiree (CW4) originally from WI via AZ and met my Army (former) wife at Ft. Mac. She was the first non-nurse officer at Ft. Stewart in the mid-70s. We live about 30 min. south of the Atl airport in a county that has gone real leftist, but still get a letter cosigned by the sheriff and chief probate court judge reminding us when it is time to renew our CCWs. Doubt if that would ever happen up north.

We go to Clybel once a quarter or so, or down to the DNR range at West Point WMA that is unsupervised, unlike Clybel, and little used which allows us to do things like setting up a chrony and and puttering around for hours if we want to. It looks like most folks clean up their own junk, too.

Do any of you GA folks know of a public range that has berms further away than 100 yards?

Unfortunately, you're right but thereis a bill in the Senate that would require a state to recognise the ccw of your home state. That would make it possible for us to carry anywhere inthe US. Nice.

As long as it's in a closed compartment, console or glove. Does NOT have to be locked. Do not just lay it on the seat or under the seat.

We'll miss Bruce up here and BD is in a nuts-o county apparently. FWIW- I have my own range that I can shoot out to at least 500 yards on, our Pistol Permits are for a lifetime (unless the law changes or you do something stupid), and back tags aren't required in the northern zone. Also in the plus side for NY (NORTHERN NY!!!)- we're awash in fine fishing and hunting, we have a 6 MILLION acre park just to the south of us. That's 3 times the size of Yellowstone in case you were wondering and there are areas just as wild as anything out west. We have world class skiing, bob sledding and other winter sports, we HAVE winter and 3 other seasons whereas Georgia and the south has 2- hot and really hot. We don't have Black Widows, rattle snakes, copperheads, cotton mouths, termites, roaches, etc. We don't have "cities" to speak of. Watertown and Plattsburgh are as big as they come and they ain't a pimple on a real cities .....butt. Our deer are much larger than the so called deer I saw in Mississippi and North Carolina. I thought the Miss deer were some deformed dogs when I first saw them.

True, our taxes are obscene, some of our gun laws are draconian, and the Eastern Footloop Liberal's home range is just to the south of us. Our neighbors in ultra liberal Vt, Mass and Ct as well as our downstate cousins consider us "rednecks", the area is their playground and they somehow have managed to infect some of the populace with their peculiar disease, mostly the college crowd.

But, in the end, this is home and I prefer to fight for my home rather than leave it. I've come to the reluctant conclusion they'll bury me here before I give up.

I think SC just reached agreement with VA this past year. Below from VA State police site - several other states recognize/accept VA permits with no written agreement:

Reciprocity and Recognition

Virginia extends reciprocity or recognition to citizens holding both resident and non-resident permits/licenses from the following jurisdictions as set forth below:

Listing of states with which Virginia has Reciprocity Agreements* (A formal written agreement exists between the two jurisdictions):

Alaska
Florida

Mississippi
North Carolina

I am really glad you like it up there.....Now if you could convince a million or so of your closest northern frineds to stay put every winter.....We would be happy here. We like new yorkers .....In new york........Thanks for staying true to your area.... We men will stay here and deal with the scary wildlife that you guys are so worried about......Your playground sounds like a nice place for women who like the snow. We have to deal with all these damned girls in bikin's(not in snow suits). My question is...Why do all you people leave when it gets cold? I hear those folks tell me about "home" and how they enjoy the cold...It just always seems to be they are telling me in Savannah, in Dec.... Whats with the black socks and sandals with a football t-shirt?
Is that some kinda uniform up there???

Do you see me there? Do I look scared to you? I spent plenty of time in NC, and Miss. Great places for vacations. Nice people. Can't drive for crap when there's so much a s a heavy dew, much less any real snow, but I suppose that's their problem. And they seem to think 50 F requires sweaters and complaints about "the cold". Heck, my kids are still in the pool at 50F. Must be a stronger bloodline. Sweating seems to be a sport down there. Like NASCAR it isn't, but I don't have the heart to tell them. And of course then there's the whole taking pride in a war they lost. Got me.

As far as the tourists, yeah, I know what you mean. However you should know there's a difference between NYC and and Northern NY. I realize the rest of the state gives us a bad name, but then the Klan and the white trash 5th generation welfare crackers gives all southerners a bad name too. Don't mistake one for the other and we'll try not to do the same.

Well, gotta go cut hay and wood. Got 6 months of winter to look forward to. Darn sure I'm not going to spend in some place where I sweat 24/7.

Hey Ace and Bret,

I read the last few posts to my wife, we laughed so hard we were crying.

Northern New York is beautiful but man that's a lot of snow and it sits there for a long, long, time. Bret, ya'll come on down, we welcome you with open arms and your kids would love it here. We close schools if it clouds up and looks like snow. By the way, sweatin' is to a sport and I'm pretty sure it beats playing "who lost the most toes to frostbite this year". I promise will protect you from the nasty little critters.

Bret has New york city, here in Georgia we have Atlanta (full of liberals and politicians) which many years ago we walled off with a highway called I-285 that surrounded the entire city. Gave them their own little reservation and expected them to stay on it. They still slopped over the edges into the rest of the state. Both states would be alot better off if we could keep those folks secured some place safe.

I'm sure the Califonios wish LA, San Fran and Hollyweird weren't in their state, same for those eastern shore Marylanders who are stuck with the western libs, or Illinoisans and the Chicago machine. I think Skaneateles must be the place the NY city folk have their summer homes. It's definately the land of liberal moonbats, even though the county is majority republican. They have laws against everything up here. Every red light in town has it's own sign telling you what you can and can't do at that particular light. right turn on red; right turn on red with no pedestrians present, no right turn on red between 8:AM and 5:PM, and on and on. When we started this project the neighbors proposed a town ordinance that would have prohibited anyone in town from doing any work outdoors after 5:00 PM, or on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. It actually got as far as a public hearing before someone pointed out how absurd it would be. When would a 9 to 5 guy have been able to paint his house, or cut his grass? The folks running this place just didn't realize that not everyone can afford to pay other folks to do that sort of stuff during the workday.

I think before too long the whole state may come to a halt one morning when the population steps out the door and realizes they can't take another step without violating one ordinance or another. The state government has pretty much ground to a halt already as they are so buried in contradictory legislative regulations that they can't seem to hold a session. The answer to any of life's annoying little issues is always "pass another ordinance"

I may be in danger of becoming a "Damn" yankee, as the folks who "bought" my house in SC are bailing out, and the next project seems likely to be down there. No one I've talked to in Maine seemed to think that going back up north for work was a good idea. At least I'm missing this summer in the low country.

BD you just have to come further north. Up "abject poverty" is a hobby and the guy with the job at a prison is considered "rich". It's the college types and left over hippies, with a smattering of greenies, that seem the make all the problems.

A lot of our problems would disappear if NYC, LI and the lower counties became their own state.

EXACTLY!!! Yes, our deer are smaller, but we can shoot 12 of them which makes for great entertainment. (Not to mention 3 turkeys and an unlimited number of hogs)

Well...they ain't exactly something ta turn ya nose up at RugerFan. ;-)

All of these were harvested from the 1700 acre tract of land where I just retired from. All were taken by bow. These are just a few of the pics I have of more.

I was only acknowledging the difference in average body size. Not turning my nose up at all, rather I am very happy harvesting GA deer.

As for the GA get together, I'm SE near Ft Stewart. I'm in for a meet n greet.
