You all here know me as Springfield, also known as Springfield Slim on the cowboy boards. I do custom leather work, mostly items for CAS type shooting but I have done other things for guys on the castboolit forum also. You can see some examples of my work at my website at www.whyteleatherworks.com If there is something you need that you just can't find somewhere else, give me a try. Or if you have something special in mind, and don't want an off the shelf cowboy holster. I do all my items one at a time, to the customers specs as much as possible, but don't charge an arm and a leg to do it. I am basically a stay at home dad who is working from home so I can raise my kids and not have them grow up in a daycare. The website has my e-mail address and phone number also if you have any questions.

Slim,

could you figure out a price on some shell belts if I send you the leather? Reason is, I shot a Cape Buffalo last December in Zimbabwe and the hide halves and skull are enroute from the customs broker. Obviously, I would like to get a couple belts made from this hide.

Idaho: sounds do-able, but I am going to need more info, like size of belt, how many shell loops and such. My work e-mail is mark AT whyteleatherworks.com As for the flap holster, a pic wold be nice to make sure we are talking about the same holster. I assume this for Ruger Blackhawk type guns? A group buy for holsters, sounds interesting! Of course I'd have to get permission to use the logo first.

A similar flap holster for 4 & 6" N frame Smiths would be just the ticket, too, for those of us who prowl through some thick stuff looking for hogs.

I googled Ruger Flap holsters and came up with a few different ones. On looking at them I have a few ideas on how to make them "better". Two things I see right off the bat. One is the square bottomed holster (end cap type) will cost more as it involves a bit of difficult sewing. I was thinking on just sewing the bottom closed like on a GI 45 holster. The other is type of closure. Some have the post type like on a GI 45 holster, and some have the twist type closure frequently seen on tonneau covers for trucks and boats. And a couple had a strap of leather that reached over the flap and also use the post. I will defer to the masses but personally I think the strap type is ugly as heck, and will tend to get caught on things. The twist type is more secure but will slow down the draw in case you need it fast. The post is the simplest, but not a secure. I personally think a heavy duty snap would work the best. I also don't like where most of the posts were located. Seems to me the middle of the holster position most of them are will have the most potential to scratch the gun. I could sew on a small protective lining over the inside part but this raises the price again. I was thinking of positioning the snap/post on a small projection on the sewn edge of the holster, thus putting both sides of the post away from the inside of the holster entirely. It also makes it very simple to replace the snap if it breaks/wears out/corrodes. Any other suggestions/ideas will be welcome.

Great minds think alike, I like those sewn bottoms. Posts work well, and for a long time, but in the very long run, snaps are more replaceable. Although if you were wanting to be quiet as you removed your pistol the post would win out. I could go either way, no big deal.

Speachless. Oustanding .

Mark,

Do they still sell yellow tanned Latigo? I used to make all my leather goods as a kid back in the 70's with thick yellow tanned latigo. That was some nice leather.

I'd sure be interested in a good flap holster for my 7 1/2" Old Army.

The cavlary holser used by civil war reenactors works great you can pick one up for about $30 I have two, a right and left depending on how I want to carry.

The one that fit my 1860 didn't suit the Old Army - are you talking about one sized for the Remingtons?

Most of the Latigo Tandy sells is pre dyed either black or mahogany. I don't use it much as it is too soft for Cowboy Action holsters.

The re-enactor holsters are OK, but sometimes OK isn't good enough. Kinda like 5 dollar wine to me is OK, cheap whiskey is ok, my jeans and shirts from the second hand store are OK. But with my leather I like it to be made for the individual gun. It all depends on what is important to you. Guess that's why I cast all my own bullets, sometime OK isn't good enough. I am working on a Flap Holster for one of my guns, I'll post it here when I get it finished.

I'm still hoping that you'll make a cross draw flap holster for a Ruger Old Army.

Jim: I'm going to work on that this weekend. I have a buddies ROA that I borrowed for another holster so it is a good time to do the pattern.

My sons and I have 3 of Mark's holsters. He made me a pancake for my Model 19; one of my sons has a "Duke type" for his Vaquero (use to be in Mark's catalog); my other son just recently got one for his Freedom Arms '83. All the work was good quality and he's a man of his word.

Mark has made me a Win 94 butt cuff and three rifle slings. Beautiful work, quick delivery and outstanding quality with very nice prices.

I recommend him without reservation.

I have no interest in his business or him, just a very happy customer.

OK, Jim, here is the prototype. I am giving this version to the guy who's ROA I am using for patternmaking, and he wants black, so this is the holster undyed and so far un-wetmoulded.

It looks good! Is it right hand cross-draw?

Springfield
06-21-2010, 07:16 PM
It is, actually. Here is is with some light molding, and you can see the snap on the front and the belt loop on the back. I am going to have to make the loop smaller on the next version, for crossdraw anyway, as it is too large. This one is made from 8-9 oz leather but I think normally I will use 10-11 oz. Although to tell the truth, this one seems heavy enough, I am just used to heavy cowboy action holsters

Mark.. I have finally gotten my wife into CAS with me.. She has my 1892. I had to shorten the stock a BUNCH for it to fit her like she wanted it.. I am wondering, do you make custom fit butt covers?.. I could send you some tracings of her stock or whatever... Looking for something to make the rifle a little more *HERS*..
Thanks and let me know.

I do quite a bit of that, custom covers. Did one for the owner of this forum, am now doing another one for another member here. It is for a thumbhole stock, going to be a real challenge. Yours would be a piece of cake by comparison. Here is 45 nut's stock cover.
