This years trip included a buddy of mine Mike, my dad, and myself. It is about 25-26 hours from home to the p-dog flat we shoot. With 3 of us driving we hauled **** driving straight through, only stopping to fuel, pee, and let the old man stretch his legs. We took the redneck limo, dads 1997 F250 PowerStroke, actually averaged about 18MPG the whole trip.

We camped right on the prairie, set up a tent, Dad the camp cook, made breakfast and dinner on the tailgate.

Normally we shoot 223's and thats all my buddy Mike brought with him except for his Ruger 22 pistol. Mike shot 1200 rounds in a day and a half, he thought he had enough ammo when we left MI...turns out you can never have enough and ran completely out of everthing including the bulk pack of 22lr's he had.

My 3 goals for this trip were
Goal #1 kill at least 1 p-dog with my 454....I ended up killing 2. This one with a soild 454424 at about 75 yards. The other was with an 454424 HP shot at about 30 yards and it cut him completely half....head and shoulders went one way legs and guts went the other.

Goal #2
Kill some p-dogs with my 218 BEE and 225415 cast from 50/50 Pure/WW pushed by 4.7gr of RedDot. I dont know how many I killed with it but I really really really like the combo and results. This one was shot at about 110 yards off shooting sticks.

Goal #3 was to kill a dog at 1000 yards or better. I didnt meet this goal, the heat, wind, and the mosquito's didnt help. I made 2 soild hits at about 825-850 yards but didnt want to walk down, find the dogs, and range it to the bench because the mosquito's honestly would have carried me away into the prairie.

Here is my dad with his super bull DPMS killing anything this side of 650 yards.

I did kill a double with my 243 Super Rock Chucker at 173 yards with 58gr Moly coated V-Max at about 4200fps. Head shot on one and cut the other one in half.

Sweet trip.

What barrel length is that 243? I've got a 6mm Rem Ackley that I built on a Mauser VZ24 action with a 28" Benchmark barrel. Ballistics are about the same; 4200 fps with a 60gr Blitzking or 3900 fps with a 70gr TNT.

Man I am jealous. Willbird and I went to SD some years ago and spent a few days shooting the little rats. I want to go again. I have a friend that moved to WY and is looking for dogs for a possible future hunt. Thanks for the pics. I love the .22 cast on a dog!

Questions:

(1) Is that 218 Bee a Handi-Rifle?
(2) Where's the trees?
(3) What kind of camping equipment did y'all use?
(4) What was the menu?

An observation: your dad certainly can't claim that you were a gift from the milkman!

Looks like a fun trip. Where abouts did this hunt take place? Love the wide open spaces. The furthest I have ever shot at something was on a range at 330 meters. :-(

(1) The BEE is a Handi Rifle. It started out as a 22 hornet and that was rechambered. I bought the barrel, dies, and about 400 rounds of brass and built it up on shotgun frame.

(2) Whats a tree? The only tree's out there are the ones near water and house's...which there arent much of those two out there.

(3) Just normal camping gear. Cleared the cactus and set up a tent.

(4) Pork loin, pasta salad, chicken salad stuff, eggs, bacon, coffee...normal hunting/camping trip food.

We were in Grass Range/Winot area Montana. The fellow that lets us shoot his ranch has about 12,000 acers and always tells us not to come out until we kill them all.

what no rattle snakes with that big pistol?
Maybe it's late enough in the year they aren't up so much. Or MT is to far North for them.

Not been dog shootin in six years. don't know what's wrong with me.

We were all on the look of for rattle snakes because that was going to be on the menu one night if we got one. Never did see one though....had our 22lr handguns loaded with rat shot just incase.

We have only ever seen 2 snakes there both snakes caught bullets, we have been shooting the same town since I was a freshman in High School...I have been out of college for 2 years now so about 10 years we have been shooting this town.
