If I have a cylinder of tin with a diameter of .500, how long would the cylinder have to be to have one oz of tin? I am looking to make a mold for tin slugs to make it easier to add specific amounts to the casting pot. If you have it, please share the formula so that the length can be computed for different alloys. For instance, I have 60/40 solder.

The volume of a cylinder is 3.14 X radius X radius X height.

The density of tin is 4.224 oz/cubic inch

The length of a 0.5" diameter tin cylinder that would weigh 1 ounce is 1.206 inches.

Thanks for the formula. After googling for the weight of a cubic inch of lead and some head scratching (my algebra is kind of dated), the length of a 0.5" diameter LEAD cylinder that would weigh 1 ounce is .778 inches. So, for 50/50 solder, a cylinder .992 inch long would weigh one oz. Call it one inch to make it easy to work with.
