I haven't got stellar accuracy using 330 Gould HP's in my 45-70 using IMR3031. Noticed in an old lyman manual that you can use both unique and 2400 to load this boolit. Anybody out there using this combination? An if you are, do you use polyester filler on top of the powder.

Got to ask from your handle but is it a converted Siamese Mauser?

I had one made up about 35 years ago with a 26" barrel. Sold it and many others to pay my way through school.

It shot very well and was capable of producing more recoil that I cared to handle!

I shot mainly Lyman 457125 and 457193 boolits out of it. I found that I got leading in the last 2" or so of the barrel so used 410 fiber wads under the boolit to solve that. Same load in the shorter barreled Marlin 1895 was not a problem.

So to answer the question, I guess I have to say no I have not used that combination but yes, I have found fillers to help in that and other cartridges.

I use 1/2 a grain of poly fill for my 425 Ranch Dogs and 20.0 grains of 2400 in my .450 Marlin guide gun. No gas check required.

Makes a great short range, low-cost plinking load.

I never tried poly over Unique, got good to very good accy anyway, so never bothered with
it.

I thought that both of those powders did not require fillers; were not position sensitive....

When I started shooting CAS, they allowed the 45-70 in open competition. I used to shoot 9gr of Unique under a 300gr RCBS w/ no GC. I used a 1gr+/- Dacron wad. The rounds were very accurate to 50yds.

I shoot 10-12 gr of Unique in .45-70 with no dacron, very accurate at 100 yds.
Try some with and without, you will probably find you have been wasting your time, but
maybe not. Only way to know is to try it.

Some powders really need help with dacron, others don't. I would guess (as I said, I
never tried it with Unique) that Unique is one of the ones that doesn't need it.

I have found Unique to be virtually position INSENSITIVE in any and every cartridge. I have done hundreds of the muzzle up-muzzle down chrony test with cartridges from 223 to 450 watts imp with both of these powders. 2400 is position SENSITIVE in everything I own except the 223 and I will not load it without a filler.

I have shot many thousand rounds of cast bullets over 2400 and never found any need for a filler. I am agin it!
