Do any of you folks have any input on this 400 gr. FN plain base? I'm looking for a woods deer/plinking bullet at 1300 to 1500 fps in a Ruger #1 .45/70. This rifle does very well with Cast Perf 400 gr. GC's at 1650 fps. I was hoping to get by with a PB sized to .459" and lubed with BAC and run at a couple hundred fps slower.

I thought I'd bump this thread up just once in the event that maybe ONE person here had some input....[smilie=1:...:)

I personally have had no luck with the Lee 405 PB boolit. I am in the process of trying the Ranch Dog 350 grain GC boolit, too many guns too many loads.
I will try to enlarge the Lee mould in the near future.
You ought to at least equal the anemic factory loads with softer alloys with plain base boolits. Felix lube is good to go with. Check out filler and wads. All my 45 cal rifles are using .460 dia. boolits.
I just got a one pound block of beeswax and have a jar of bear grease and some lanolin, who knows what might come from that.
At present I am trying to get a load to work in my 375 H&H Ruger #1. Takes time.

The 457463 is a darn good bullet in the M95 Marlin and darned accurate. I've shot it in the Number 1 Ruger and it did all right but it's been a while and I don't have my records.

I'd try it./beagle

I have several 45/70's also and I don't size smaller than .460 , you may be Ok with the 400pb at .459, it depends on your bore size and your alloy. You might want to mike one of those GC 'd commercial boolits and see what diameter they are , lots of folks having problems with New Lyman molds dropping undersized boolits these days, luck of the draw.

If you haven't slugged your bore yet , you might want to, it's good information to have when buying molds and sizers.:redneck:

You might want to try the 457193. I think it is the best one for your trials. I also would use the Carnuba RED from Lar's instead of the BAC. I use them both and find the RED better suited for rifle bullets especially one with as much bearing surface and weight.

I been thinking about getting the saeco 400PB but I don't know if it's nose is too long for a levergun.Their 480PB shoots very well for me.It cast very well also with very few rejects.Sized .459 and using 5744 it puts them into MOA groups from my highwall. If it had a larger metplat I'd use it for hunting.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen. The Cast Perf bullet that shoots so well in the Ruger #1 says .459" on the box but the mic says it's .460". It would be just my luck to get a mold that drops at .457 or .458.....I liked the looks of the meplat on the 457643 but will look up the 457193. Cast of WW's with a little 40/60 added the bullet would probably expand on a deer anyway...I think.
