I want to shoot this bullet in my 2 groove 17 Enfield '06. Anyone shooting this bullet? If so want to share some loads that do 1800-2000fps?My alloy will be ww+2% tin . I'm thinking of tRYing IMR4198 . any other ideas would be appreciated. THANKS, BRUCE IN N.Y. :)

I have a 2-groove Remington 1917, one of the ones rebarreled by Johnson Automatics. The throat on mine is a little too tight for my 311284 mold. I have had best luck with 311644 at the 16gr./2400 level. I'd like to get it up to the 45gr./H4831 level, which is in the range of your interest, but no luck so far. I am going to try casting 311291, 311644, 314299, and SAECO RG-4 out of straight linotype and see if any of those are "old Betsy" makers.

Bruce,

That bullet is a non shooter. I can't get it below 1/2" on a consistent basis.

Try 44-46 grains of H-4831 with a large pistol magnum primer. I prefer the Winchester myself. But 58 grains of H-870 can get you 1 1/2" at 2100 fps if you water drop your mix. If you don't, you gotta cut the charge cause that bore rider lets go.

1/2" you say ? I"d be more than happy with 1/2" groups at 50yrds! I"m assuming thats at 100yds. Anything that shoots under 3" @100yds. is game enough for me. This rifle has been sporterized and gets hunted with on a regular basis mostly with condoms.I' ve removed all jacket fouling preparing to shoot cast. Maybe i'll try light loads first and work up to or past 1600fps level and check for leading along the way.THANKS ,BRUCE IN N.Y. :)

CS2- If I have a rifle that shoots OVER three inches, it's gone! With a scope, that is. Iron sights get some leeway, to allow for bad eyes!

My shooting partner has one of those.

The throat's too tight for my version of the 311284 as the nose runs about .302".

I sized the nose down in a .30T Eagan die and it shoots them quite well.

Get one of these guys to send you a few and see if they'll fit. If so, they'll probably shoot just fine.

I'd send some but I don't have any cast at present./beagle

I cast some 311284's this past weekend to try in my Krag sporter. I'd be interested in hearing from someone that has shot them in a Krag. Thought I might start out with 14 grns 4759 or 16 grns 2400.

.............All time favorite load with the 311284 in my 03A1 (4 grv ) is 23.0 H4198 + Dacron. Velocity runs ~1650 FPS. Wanna go a bit faster, dribble in a couple more grains of powder. Boolits are air cooled WW type alloy.

Thanks for your reply Buckshot; sounds like a good load to start with.I didn't intend to push any buttons with my reply, just trying to sort out the data presented me. beagle: My mold cast a .300 nose with ww+2%tin.run thru a .311 sizing die lubed with lee alox.tried a dummy round @ 3.066 OAL like the lyman book states and chambers ok ; just touches leade.
waksupi: my rifle came to me with redfield reciever sight and partridge front sight; used that combo for three deer seasons and never had complaint. most all of my rifles today have peeps today . I like the challenge especially with leverguns. THANKS, BRUCE IN N.Y.

From an old notebook. Sorta cheating, used a telescope. 200 yards prone with military sling.

That load still slams them in there, but I have to use new-production H4831 now instead of the WW II surplus.

Resp'y,

Good shooting Bob! Thats the kind of data I was looking for .Field reports say alot, right down to the load you used. my rifle is scope capable just prefer irons for hunting, like to see the reaction at the shot! btw did you use any filler over that load of 4831? THANKS , BRUCE IN N.Y.

Bruce,

100 yards!? No that was 10 feet! Hmmmm. Darn. Back to the bench.

You don't have to look for leading. If you were shooting a certain group size and all of a sudden it opens up, your leading. It's just that your check is removing it. That's the heads up signal.

Wow, I guess that was 100 yards. Forgot I always use a scope. Looked like 10 feet though. Sorry.

If you can't do that just keep moving the target up and lie.

P Patcher,

I’ve used the 311284 almost exclusively in my 1896 Krag which is in original configuration with a 1902 type sight. I also have one of the old Redfield “No Gunsmithing” target receiver sights attached.

My standard load is a 311284 bullet out of wheelweight weighing 224 gr with Hornady gas check over 52 grains of WC 872 for a velocity of 2016 fps with standard deviation of 14. I heat treat my bullets to a BHN of about 20. My bullet ogive measures .3015 and I size the bands to .311. Lubes I have used are FWFL from the big batch and 50/50 Alox, both work equally well in this load.

My load matches the original load power wise and on my rifle I find that it is right on with the 1902 sights out to at least 600 yards. Accuracy wise the load will hold the 10 ring on a SR-1 target using the target receiver sight, prone with a sling.

I have not used the powders you mentioned . The 16 gr of 2400 should work and the references I have handy don’t list 4759.

In checking my load book I have also used 32.7 gr of IMR 4320 which gave velocities of 1955 fps. My notes indicate this powder was a bit position sensitive. If the powder was forward in the case velocities were up to 2040 fps. If the powder was “down” around the base velocities stayed around 1955 fps.

What configuration is your Krag in?

CIVILIZE EM WITH A KRAG !!!.

Have Fun, JCherry

JCherry,
Thanks for the very informative reply it was just the kind of info I was looking for. My bullet measures .3015 nose and I size to .311 also.
That load of 14 grns of 4759 is listed as a starting load for that bullet in one of my lyman manuals. I have two Krags both are 1898,s one has had the barrel cut back to 24" and is mounted in a sporter stock it still has the original rear sight but has a Lyman ramp sight on the front. Its a good looking piece and the workmanship is very good, its a great shooter with 311291's over 19 grns of 4759.
The other Krag is stock military configuration, it was purchased by my great grandfather back when they were first made available as surplus and is in fine condition and really has not been fired much. Thanks again for all the info.

My Krag has a very worn bore, so the best bullet I tried in it was 314299. With 17/2400, it shoots about as well as any Pbullet rifle I have.
