View Full Version : One powder only

In spite of the fact it has probably been answered several times, I am unable to find it with the search function.

If you could choose one powder and one powder only, what powder would it be?

For ALL your handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

I lean towards "Unique" and "Red Dot" but am very interested in other's opinions.

Thanks,
Bob

I have to agree with you Bob, either Red Dot or Unique. Not the ideal for all applications but will handle all applications...Ray

Unique,partially because it's available in my small town....or was until the 'shortages' bit us in the back side.

H4895....covers most every cart. from the .222 Rem up to the .458 Win...also a great reduced load powder powder using Hodgdon's 60% rule for H4895...:-D

Rifle=Varget
Pistol=Titegroup
Shotgun=Goex Cartridge Grade

Although, I am constantly amazed at the performance of Unique in all kinds of situations.

greetings I would go with UNIQUE. It is my "Can do" powder. Everything can be loaded with it... I have not tried 50 BMG but I would not be surprised.
You just have to be aware of the nasty pressure spikes as you reach MAX loads.

Tough choice but 3F over 2F, Grex or Elephant. It is the original and dirty but will function in all aplications. Herco for smokeless.

Hodgdon's Triple 7 in 3fG. I can load anything from .25ACP to .458 Win Mag with it.

Triple 7! Well, maybe alright in cottridge guns, but for front loaders, I think it is junk.

Unique.

Red Dot. I like the way it bulks up, and works OK for any of the cast boolits I like to shoot. If one powder was really it, factory loads would have to do for larger game hunting. 4895 if it could be two choices. Next week my choices might be different.

i have used unique to launch jacketed bullets at reuced velocities in rifles.
however i can't hit my ass with it in cast boolit loads in rifle type applications.
i would rather use sr-4756 if i had to load everything including shotgun with one powder.
or steel the magnum shotgun powder.

How in the heck are you going to use unique in 338 Winmag? or to function an AR or AK?
There for, IMR-4064 & TiteGroup...

Read post #1 again. "Frontloaders", as you call them, aren't in this picture.

Very hard choice but Red Dot will get me by in most everything. It'll be a poor choice in many cartridges though.

Tough choice but I think your on the right track with red dot and or unique. I thought about a bunch of different powders as well, but could always think of SOMETHING that you cant load with varget, h332, h110, bulseye, etc etc etc etc etc. Even black powder strikes out because I wouldnt want to fire it in any of my gas guns.

Unique is probably the most versetile powder ever made. It wont function a semi-auto, but you can just about guarantee that its going to send a projectile down range. Might not be screaming velocity wise, but at least it'll be headed in the right direction

I don't want to send this into a OT situation, but UNIQUE VS TITEGROUP? Titegroup is amazing when it comes to case sensitivity, and I've shot it in everything from 32Auto through 50AE, and 500S&W...

I use TightGroup as well and have found it to be cleaner burning than Unique. But I am not sure on how many typs of ammo you can use Tightgroup in. As you increase the powder charge with TightGroup the pressure goes up real fast so one has to be carefull with this powder I have found. But for low going towards middle of the ground loads TightGroup has worked well.

I really like it in my .44 Mag Pistol with 240Gr and 5.5Gr of Tightgroup shoots great.

I made a load that functions the 50 Desert Eagle a while back (NOT 100% though, probably closer to 60%). But your right, I hit the pressure limit on that project. However It wasn't so much the upper limit, but the amount of time it stays at it's peak. I some what fell short, unless I modified the recoil springs or gas system.
It's a wonderful powder that I literally shot in every pistol caliber I load for - and believe me, it's a lot. Never shot rifle with it, but I seen several recipes.

...and you know what, I think I'll take back IMR-4064, and go with IMR-3031 with rifle. I think you can shoot a bit more calibers with that powder.

I'd probably go with Unique, but since this shortage, I'm not seeing much, but I am seeing quite a bit of 700 and 800X sitting on shelves and I bet that could be made to work pretty well, too:D

One powder for rifle and pistol is silly.

Unique for pistol and Varget for rifle.

To be honest when I first started out reloading I felt the same way pick as few powders as I could to load what I had. And decided to throw that out the window lol. But to still keep the powder type low. So I did settle on W-296 and H-110 depending on what I can get and for low end pistol loads TightGroup. And for my Rifle of 45-70 H-322 and for my 30-06 with a Lee 210Gr IMR 3031 or IMR 4350 of which I can use both between my 30-06 and my .243. And if need be I can use the IMR-3031 in my 45-70 if I do not wish for them to be as HOT as the H-322 loadings.Whewwwwww. :)

Silly or not if'n I was to be stuck with one powder for rifles and handguns I would choose Unique. Unique will make large guns go bang. Our friend Willbird brought over his Mod 70 in .375 H&H one day with some Unique loads. Very accurate. A 300+gr boolit moving at 800fps is nothing to laugh at if it is comming your way.

Nrut, what kind of shotgun applications does it have...Ray

Hello Ray,
I wouldn't know as I have never loaded for a shotgun, and don't plan to as I have only shot 2 rounds in a shotgun in the last 27 years...IIRC

H4895 would also make a pretty poor pistol powder....I have four handguns here in Canada but we are not allowed to hunt with them so I stand by my recommendation of H4895 for all the rifles I shoot except the Hornet if I was forced to use just one powder...:mrgreen:

If only one then 2400 but if I could have only two then red dot and 5010. With duplex loads I could shoot everything from my 32acp to my 358norma and do a pretty good job of it.

Unique or 2F, depending on how old your guns are.

I could make all my smokeless irons go bang, and actually hunt with most of them with just one powder......... H-4227

Not that I would want to be in that nutsy cuckoo situation as I would dearly miss N-120 and H-335 as well as a few others.

2400.

My caliber selection is essentially built around it.

There are more "economical" powders (N340) and more dynamic powders (LilGun), but 2400 works in everything I have...

i shoot a large range of firearms, so that will not work for me (380 acp to 300 win mag.) i may be able to get by with 3 or 4. but honestly, there is enough difference between powders that i want what works best in each caliber. sometimes, i am lucky enough that i can get 2 or 3 calibers from 1 powder. sometimes, i need 2 powders for one caliber (depending on load). i buy what i need to make me and the gun happy. i have figured out though that i use enough of some powders that i can buy in bulk and save some money.

WIth Unique you could make all of them work pretty well. Many of the choices basically
discount the pistol totally. What do you think you could get in your .38 Spl or .44 with
IMR 4895???????

The more I work with it the more I think HS-6. A bit slower than Unique, which is what I like. I haven't tried it in other than just .45 ACP & Colt yet, but I think it might work.
