I bought some .308 bullets and decided against using them in my M1 carbine. does anyone have any idea what they might actually be used for?
They are as follows;

.308 diameter
110-112 grain hollow point
flat base with no gas check notch
two lube grooves and are lubed

They are very simular to the one in this picture.

It looks similar to the Lyman #311008, and I believe RCBS has a mold that's similar also, but I believe neither are of hollow-point persuasion.
Both molds were designed with the .32-20 in mind, although usually sized .313-.314 for that application.

As WS said, sounds like a 32-20 boolit that's sized smaller to me. Also useful as a shorter range vermin boolit in any 30 cal. when sized right. Be fun in your carbine, but the PB might limit it to single shot use unless you hit one of those magic loads.

It may be Lyman 31133 (311033) which is a HP version on 311008. Designed for use in 32-20 and usable in any 30 caliber as a light or small game bullet.

those do appear to be from a lyman 31133. I have this mold an would not part with it. I use this boolit in my 7.62x25 and 30mauser with great success. have yet to try it in the 30carbine but that was next on the list. I have also milled the base off to the top of lube grove leaving only one groove and use it in the 32acp. so far my favorite in all 3. don't you just love it when one mold works for 3 guns

With no gas check how much leading problem would I have using them as a .308 varmint bullet? Actually a paper puncher for fun.

I assume you you plan to use them in a 30carbine. in me 7.62 tok I run 1300-1400fps with no leading using lla for lube. at 1600 fps the leading was managable. if loads in this range will cycle the action on your rifle you should be ok. I would load some and find out.
have fun.

I am waiting on a Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook and then I may use them for a .308 load in a bolt gun.

They should be fine for plinking "vicious tin cans" or small "varmints" , I would keep them around 1300-1400fps

I have the PB version, 311008. I use it in a M-94 30/30; M1 30 carbine (also Ruger BH) and a M-92 32/20.

It is an excellent plinker in the 30/30 and cast of linotype works wonders in the 32/20 which dates to 1894. I am not pushing them very fast... approx 1500 or so.

The jury is still out on the M1 Carbine, but cast of linotype is showing promise.

I like the idea of no GC. Saves on my meager supply.

Your HP would be an interesting twist. Have fun with them!

In a 308? Try about 8 gr Unique to start with and sized +.002 over bore size. THink of it as a 22 Magnum on steroids. In the Carbine you'd have to look the load info up or use 32-20 rifle loads. Should be fine to near 100 yards on chucks, snapping turtles, etc.

That would be the pure deal for the old Marlins in .32 rf/cf. They had tight barrels and a reversable firing pin. Passed on one going for peanuts at auction once because I did not know about the convertible feature until I got home and looked it up. I suspect no one else in the crowd knew either, or it would not have been going for peanuts.

Bret,

I've seen the .002 over bore suggestion many times but always thought (and subscribe to) .002 or so over groove size. We load to .312+ for my boy's Ruger M77 in .308 Winchester.

Hope I don't come across as being confrontational. I just feel comfortable typin to you, knowin you realize the confusion of conversation without body language.
