Ok guys this is the sign up page for the .502HP/FP Cramer mold which will be made of brass with stainless steel pins this will be a 2 cavity mold.
The pictures below are for the final design and the other is for the extra pin design. I am going with a larger pin for the extra because if its not what you would like there is enough material to have it shaped to what you want, Cant do that if its made to small.
The new pin dimensions will be .275 wide going down .100 for the straight wall with a total depth of .300, same depth as the final design mold.
I am going to contact MiHec about making a nose punch for this also, might add a little more to the cost but worth it.
The cost is 95 + 15 for shipping, the Extra pins will be 8 buck more. I will let you know if we can get a nose punch made and what it would cost.
This is a great deal for a 2 in one mold or with the extra pins a 3 in one mold.
Please sign up here to make it eaiser to keep track for MiHec and myself.
Thanks again for all your input on this bullet. I cant wait to shoot it.

You got it right, Miha!!!
IMHO, this mold is sure to become a .50 classic that will revitalize interest in the S&W 500..... Anyone "sitting on the fence" with this GP had better get on board soon.....

Those dimensions sound really good. Can't wait to see how it shoots. I am so glad to see Miha has us on the drawing board.
I hope I'm not out of line here, but ya know, this would probably a good time to identify what guns and barrel lengths these bullets are going to be fired from while many interested people are focused on 69daytona's and Miha's .502 creation. I know 69daytona has both a 4 inch and a 10.5 500 and my own is a 6.5 500. There are a couple of custom guns in the mix. How about the rest of you guys?
How many of us own or have access to a chronograph? We all know handloading info for the 500 leaves a lot to be desired. It would be great to form a network of people to provide input for the development of this boolit and its potential loads.
It's nice to see that Ranger Rick has joined the list of future owners as his name is becoming legendary to newbies like myself for the 500. Lots of enthusiasm for this new mold and its recognized versatility. I hope everyone will want to contribute what they learn later....

For those of us waiting I just wanted to let you know I have one of Miha's Cramer molds, I ordered the 200gr HP/FP and the quality is second to none. I only had a little time to cast a few so after lubing the pins and spaying it down with brake cleaner, I cast about 10 throw aways to get the mold up to temp and then it was casting perfect bullets, If the .502 is this good there will be a lot of happy people here.
Thanks Miha!!!

I am in for one with extra pin set.
I'm thinking about ordering a third set of pins so I can have a smaller hollow point size option to go along with the other two larger ones. I'd like something similar to the one shown in 69daytona's prior threads post #108.
It would seem that these pins themselves would be somewhat universal in size and could even be applicable to other caliber Cramer type bullet moulds.
If Miha could include them I'd be in for a third set of pins -- either Miha machined or be provided one of the larger already designed styles I could have re-machined down to a smaller HP size here.
I'm especially excited to experiment with alloys and expansion with this boolit. I believe the smaller HP would give a full range of hollow point sizes to experiment with...

Unlike what appears to be the most common future for boolits from these moulds, (use in the 500 S&W), I am hoping I can get them to work in an AutoMag V, in .50AE! :Fire:

frank505,
I believe you will need to commit your sincere desire to have one of these molds on this thread. You will be notified when you need to send your money to the mold maker (MiHec). A production date hasn't been determined yet so you will have to wait along with the rest of this group until MiHec is able to produce them. Hopefully we'll be on his production list shortly.
The price will be $95 for the mould, $15 for shipping, and $8 for the additional pins (which will be required).

Miha,
We obviously have many dedicated people signed on to have one of your moulds for this caliber. This boolit has so much material on its nose area that I believe it begs to have a variety of HP pin sizes we could experiment with.
I for one would be interested in having up to 4 different styles of reversible pin pairs. That would enable experimentation with several different alloys and HP sizes for this boolit. So if you have some HP ideas you'd like to try - consider me a buyer.
In my humble opinion, this boolit has all the potential to become a true "classic and legend" in the mould world, especially if we have a variety of pin choices offered with it. I'd have to say at this point I've never been "goofy" about having a boolit mould -- but I am about this one... Like others, I can't wait to put this one to use.....

Also, it has the potential to be driven anywhere from 600 fps to 1600fps or more so another reason to have a choice of pin sizes.
69daytona
07-23-2009, 10:54 AM
I have sent Miha the design for a smaller pin size that TDC is interested in, it will be .175 at the top and .300 deep with a slight round bottom, and the big deep pin has been revised to Miha's 5 sided pin still .375 at the widest and .350 deep.
No changes to the bullet design have been made just the pins and an extra set or Miha if your reading this how about a double sided HP pin with the 5 sided and the small HP pin on one pin?
wilddog45
07-23-2009, 04:21 PM
The double sided pin idea sounds good if its doable.
This is the design of the small HP 69daytona is referring to. The smaller HP size is defined in orange on the right. It should provide thicker walls that would control expansion and deeper penetration at higher velocities as mentioned by happy7.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u269/tdcorp/50Bulletsugest2.jpg
This is simply a proposal to MiHec for an additional optional extra cost pin set. If he would be willing to offer this pin design it would be in addition to the two mandatory pin sets already proposed. hicard's suggestion of a five faceted HP has already been sent forward to MiHec by 69daytona and what a super idea it is!!
I had intended to create my own smaller HP pins by modifying a larger set already planned. If enough others are interested in a third or fourth HP pin set option maybe we could have Miha make them for us. The cost is minimal and the added versatility and hunting benefit would be measurable..... but I believe it should be optional rather than mandatory and leave the original GP as proposed to help expedite its creation. We all want it as soon as we can get it.....
I expect a larger .502 mould will be offered later for a heavier boolit. I know I'm already thinking about one weighing 450 to 500 grains. If it's a MiHec mould in the "Cramer" style there is no reason these pins couldn't be applicable for its use also, making that mould highly versatile and irresistible to most knowledgeable 500 S&W owners too.
It's all really up to Miha guys... but what this mould is and can be is something many of us have only dreamed about... a large .502 "Cramer" style mould with pin options to create three or four different HP sizes.... in addition its a solid nose...:drinks:

its never to late until you see its closed here from MiHec. When he has everything ready he will close it so jump on in, Miha makes great molds, I have 2 of his cramer molds so far and 3 more on order.
To be clear on the pins, what I am proposing is 4 different pin pairs that would enable the production of 2 boolits of each HP style at the same time. The pin pairs would consist of two pins each of the 5 faceted .375, 2 each of the large .375 HP's, 2 each of the medium .250 HP's, and two each of the small .175 HP's.
The redundancy would be that each pin would still form a solid nose on one side of each pin. Being able to produce more boolits of any HP type is worth the redundancy I believe. We are currently committed to two pin sets for this mould GP now. Two more pin sets would only cost each of us an additional $16 for a complete range of versatility.
If this is something Miha isn't interested in doing or it doesn't seem acceptable to everyone I'll go back to my original plan to order more pins from Miha to create my own.... Please give this some serious thought, guys.....
Thanks!
Terry

Terry,
I'm open to the additional pins. I'll be shooting this boolit out of a Handi-Rifle. The optional hollow point cavity size and velocity range of the rifle barrel will allow expansion rate anywhere from a mild mushrooming of the nose to a grenade.

++++ what happy7 said!!
Three or hopefully four pairs of HP pin sizes would be perfect as discussed. I'm for the four pin pairs while we have the opportunity... but whatever works..
I believe we have a group of casters who are seriously interested in experimenting with this fabulous new boolit. A full range of HP sizes would permit that to occur with such a large, well designed hunting boolit... and I think this is one mould that wouldn't end up stacked with a pile of others of the same caliber in the owners collection. It's versatility and usefulness will be endless from self defense to all forms of hunting......
Thanks 69datona for proposing this! Thanks Miha for being willing to work with us and make it! Thanks everyone with the confidence in this design to join with us to make it happen. It is surely destined to become a classic! :drinks:

Keep in mind that to check his current inventory at the website stubshaft mentioned you will need to click on the "DJ's Corner" button instead of any other button once you log in to the site.
FYI, gas checks can be ordered directly from Gator with free shipping included with orders of 5k or more (calibers can be mixed). Any of you guys who are unable to acquire them from Blammer in a reasonable amount of time could PM me for the contact name and phone number to buy them direct. Some of us may want to consider our own group purchase of gas checks in the future. Just a thought.....

calinb,
Lloyd Smale will be casting for the Beowulf and I expect there are others, too. There are several guns other than the S&W 500 people plan to use with this boolit.... If 69daytona doesn't already have a Beowulf he probably will shortly.... <big smile>
For everyone's info, I just checked Blammer's inventory and as I write this he now has 14k .50 Gator gas checks in stock. There should be no concerns about the immediate availability of gas checks now....

I have been looking into a .50 Bewolf upper for my AR but for the cost I think I might go with the Encore barrel.
I was looking into making a wildcat 500 out of a cut down 300RUM. but not sure what pressure levels would be like, just something for Ranger Ricks 600 and 700gr bullets so I could get them up around 2000-2100fps. Cant have a 50BMG in Calif so this might be the answer.
Cut right behind the sholder case capacity would be about 98gr of water so with the 700gr bullet should have a load od around 75gr of H1000 or IMR7828, should push the 700 easy up to 2100-2500fps maybe even a little higher.
Just some thoughts. Anyone have a Train they need stopped. : )

Note# Quick high jack of thread for one moment !!!
How about a 500 Cyrus CCM ??
It is a bolt action that uses my .500 700 Grain WFNGC at Velocities you are looking at
here are a few loads
700 Grain WFNGC 70 Grains H4895 Velocity 1850
610 Grain LFNGC 73 Grains H322 Velocity 1940
420 Grain FNGC 83 Grains H322 Velocity 2280
325 Grain Barnes XPB 88 Grains H322 Velocity 2600
The first cases I had were cut down 416 Rigby and necked out to .500 .
I now have cases that are made for this rifle and head stamped correctly .
I will be trying out these new bullets from this group buy in this rifle .
Here are a couple pictures.
The last set of pictures are of solid copper and brass hollow points ,mushroom is pretty good !!!!

Cal,
I'm as new to this caliber and Cramer style as you are. The true experts here on this .50 caliber thread are Ranger Rick and 69daytona.
All my future casting/load development will be gleaned from information I hope to get back from them and others who have signed on to this group purchase.. I'm the first to admit if I don't know something and I don't know what the correct gas check size is for your Beowulf. I hope someone will step up to help you with that.
BTW guys, I received a first order of Ranger Ricks boolits yesterday. I had heard about them from 69daytona. They are truly amazing in sizes all the way up to 700gr. If you haven't received one of his fliers I would highly recommend requesting one. It clearly shows what is possible in the development of powerful boolits and loads for this fine caliber... And this is by a guy who doesn't base his creations on abstract theories, but actually tests them with real hunting adventures in his home state of Alaska.

The 512 GCs should be for the 500 linbaugh the GCs you will need for this boolit will be .500 which Blammer or Gator should have in stock also try Hornady, Blammer is usually cheaper.
The Linbaugh uses the same size bullet as the 50BMG which is .511 or around there, a lot bigger than what ours will need.

Mihec, this is probably too late, but I have quite a bit of experience casting with .500 caliber bullets. Can you make the mold blocks a good bit larger than the previous blocks. If you don't, we are going to have trouble keeping the blocks cool. They are going to overheat and then they will warp. Brass warps easier than aluminum or iron according to Dan at Mountain Molds. Also, is there any chance of getting a three cavity?

Yes, you are bit to late.
The blocks are same dimensions as other two cavities (34x19.2x50 mm).
What I did is I moved a center of a boolits away from each other. (so you get more material between cavities).
I don't think they will warp (with normal use)

Manomet: Most people use Lee six cavity handles for these.
Thanks Mihec. That makes me very happy and I am sure that will be a big help. Making them taller would probably help as well, but I understand if that dimension is not changeable with your current brass stock.
It is not just the potential to warp, but making good bullets is more challenging if the total bullet weight to size of block ratio gets too large. I appreciate you being responsive like this.

Count me out of this one, Jack....
I'd be in for a .502 Cramer not to exceed 500 gr with its flat point. I can see jumping up 100 grains from what we have coming from Miha now, but not a 200 or 300 grain jump.
I hunt and will continue to hunt all kinds of North American big game, even the big bears. I see no need for a boolit to exceed the 500 gr weight size at this time for hunting. Just too much recoil at peak velocity with the big boolits.... Trajectory is also a very important issue to consider and I believe 500 grains would be about optimum for hunting use with this caliber. I'd like to hear from Ranger Rick about his experiences with the hunting aspects of this one...
If you guys decide to do another Cramer in the smaller 500 gr size put me on the list.. I'd be the first to jump on board...

I really like big heavy bullets for sure. My wife says I am compensating for something but I have no idea what she is talking about!!!!!
One thing to Remember is these bullets at .500 DIA can be used for revolver and rifle.
I push a 700 Grain WFNGC at velocity 1900 plus (not looking at my data to be completely correct) out of my 500 Cyrus Bolt action Rifle which uses 416 Rigby cases.
I also use them out of my Handy Rifle with higher velocities than my revolver.
As for the revolvers I have taken moose, caribou, black bear ,elk, sitka black tail deer on Kodiak ,hogs and a few other critters while the Kodiak brown bears have eluded me on two separate spring hunts with the 500S&W.
Maybe I can redeem my self if I pull that 2010 fall Kodiak bear hunt permit !!!! We will see !!!
All of the animals were taken with the 700 Grain 600 and the 535 Grain Keith .
As I have stated in another thread I have the 700 sighted in at 115 yards with my S&W 10.5 PC Hunter and it is a tack driver .
I do have other lighter bullets that I use every now and then very few at that and none for hunting.
I practice with what I am using out in the field while hunting so I mainly shoot the 700's and at this time I have over 30,000 through the tube on my S&W , good thing I roll my own !!!
I do hunt with my revolver as my main firearm and had nothing but pleasure with the heavy weights.
As for the recoil with the 700 it is not all that bad . Some of the loads with the 400 and 420 grain actually hurt with a nasty flip of the revolver barrel .
Heavy bullets are not for all folks and I think there is just a small group that actually use these for hunting .
I would say the most common .500 bullet fore hunting would be in the 500 Grain range with the 440 WFNGC being the most popular .
Anyway I am starting to ramble a bit so I will say in closing that the 700 is a very fun bullet to use ,shoot and just fun to have a few loaded sitting on the reloading bench for a conversation piece when friends come over .
RR
Thanks for the reply, RR...
I just can't justify buying this new .502 for my use. If I need a well made boolits in a size above 500gr I'll place another order with you, Ranger Rick...
I expect to be in AK next year. If I get eaten by something fuzzy that grunts because I used a boolit smaller than 500gr, you, Jack and Happy can have my 500... (if it doesn't get eaten too)

Boys, you are next.....
Just finishing .41mag and then is .502
If anything goes to the plan .502 should be finished before new year
Just wondering whats going on with this buy. Nothing posted here since the beginning of January. I'm reading a lot in the #503 Cramer Style Hollow Point GB thread and seeing nice pic's. Are there problems? Or is it to get the bigger blocks?
I'm in on both buys and in no rush for this one. Just want to know the status, since I need to pay for it when it's ready.

I think I can finish them in a 7-10 days.
It is bigger blocks than originally intended so I need to do bigger sprue plates also.

Mihec,
Wow, great to hear it is getting close. Thanks for the update. Don't rush! I would rather wait till you get it right. Thanks again for making the bigger blocks. I know it will make a difference in the casting.
Boy, I can't hardly wait!! This is going to be a great mold!

Those look great, MiHec! After more than half a year, I'm finally getting excited and my Beowulf and .50 cal muzzleloader await.
I've been making some bullets for my .45 cal muzzleloader with my first HP mold. It's a Gould 45-70 boolit (Lyman 457122 mold). Pardon my newbish question but how does one drop a casting from a Cramer mold? Whack the sprue cutter, invert the mold, open the mold, and whack the pins out from the side to drop the boolits? Is that the correct procedure?

weight of non-lubed boolit with middle size pin (the one on the pictures) is
- 378 grains with GC
- 362 grains without GC
Beautiful!!!
It looks as though you used the smaller HP pins to show the boolit examples, Miha!! Those, I predict, are going to be the standard for an optimum hunting design. Controlled expansion with heavier walls should make this the boolit of choice for those wishing to us this .502 on truly dangerous game.
Having the larger cavity options available will make this bullet the optimum self defense/urban use design. Its expected rapid expansion potential should limit the dangerous urban problem with this caliber penetrating many walls before its path is finally halted.
Great job, Miha, 69Daytona, happy7, and everyone who participated in the creation of this boolit. I believe a standard has been set for this caliber that will be talked about for decades. I can't wait to not only cast it but to try it in the field as well....

No. Pins are different for each mold (they are reversible so....)

I received my mold today. Wow--what a well manufactured and beautiful mold! I hope to cast tomorrow. This is my first custom mold and group buy and I was waiting to see how it turned out before deciding on the .452 (453) HP mold group buy. Unfortunately, the timing was terrible and the 453 group buy closed today but I'll happily order one, if you ever do a third run of the 453HP, MiHec.
